It’s been a month, and there’s still one moment inThe Legend of Vox Machinaseason 3 finale that makes me angry whenever I think about it. This season was a wild test for the group, withtheLegend of Vox Machinaseason 3 endingseeing the team defeating not one, but four separate villains: Thordak, Raishan, Ripley, and Orthax. That’s two Chroma Conclave dragons, an evil mad scientist, and a shadow demon – not too bad for a group that was so discordant in the beginningthat they couldn’t even win a drunken bar fight. On top of that, there were big losses, and a few romances cemented amongThe Legend of Vox Machina’s characters; season 3 certainly packed a lot into its 12 episodes.

Vox Machina reallygrew in individual ways in thecritically-acclaimedLegend of Vox Machinaseason 3, and together, and their bonds grew deeper and more resolute. While they were tested all season, including half of Whitestone being wiped out in an attack by Thordak’s brood, it was the shocking death of Percy and his eventual resurrection that finally cemented the deep love and respect for one another the formerly dysfunctional, selfish group has cultivated over the past three seasons. That hard-won loveis why I am so mad that one party member has apparently learned nothing.

Scanlan’s Comment About Kaylie Being His “Real” Family Was Wrong

It Was A Really Insensitive Thing To Say To His Friends

The moment I’m still annoyed by is something Scanlan said in the denouement of the finale, when Vox Machina and their allies are celebrating in Scanlan’s château. Scanlan informs them he’s leaving the team and traveling with his newfound daughter, Kaylie. Understandably, they protest, but his response to that is what really irked me.“You guys are like family to me. But now I have a real family,“he says. It wasn’t so much the timing, but the delivery that upset me.

I know it’s Scanlan’s whole deal to say the wrong thing at the wrong time, but I thought that was a really thoughtless thing to say to his teammates who had fought with him, saved his life, andquite literally died for each other. They may not be blood, but they’re certainly closer to him than the daughter he only just discovered exists. Don’t get me wrong, Kaylie is great and I’m glad Scanlan is establishing a relationship with her. But Vox Machina isn’tlikea family; they are his family, his “real” family in every way but DNA. Even by Scanlan’s standards, it was a really insensitive thing to say, even bordering on cruel, however unintentional.

Legend Of Vox Machina Season 4 Will Show Scanlan How Much He Needs His Found Family

Scanlan Still Has A Lot Of Growing To Do

Scanlan’s comment showedjust how much growing he still has to do.For three seasons now, he’s been chasing something he hasn’t been able to articulate but that’s been clear to anyone who watches: self-worth. For a while, he was trying to find it in Vox Machina, and while his newfound relationship with Kaylie does show his growth in a few areas, it also shows he’s still chasing external fulfillment. His casual dismissal of Vox Machina felt less like a man who fully understood what he was saying and more like a man telling himself, “This time, this new person I’ve found will finally make me whole.” Scanlan may have grown, but he has yet to realize that the only one who can make him whole is himself. No one will give him that, not even his daughter.

Scanlan may have grown, but he has yet to realize that the only one who can make him whole is himself.

Still, I thinkThe Legend of Vox Machinaseason 4will also show him just how much he does need the rest of his team. He may not realize it now, but they are his family, andI don’t think he’ll have as great a time without them as he thinks.Though their splitting up at the end of season 3 is sad, they’ll inevitably come back together inThe Legend of Vox Machinaseason 4. It may not happen in the first few episodes, but once the threat of The Whispered One makes himself known in Whitestone, Vox Machina will surely be called back into the service of the people of Exandria. I just hope Scanlan has a newfound appreciation for his found family by the time they are.

The Legend of Vox Machinahas been renewed for season 4and is expected to release in late 2025 or early 2026.
