Two years ago,Star Wars: Visionsintroduced a double-bladed lightsaber unlike any we’d ever seen before.Star Wars: Visionsis an outlier inStar Wars– comprised of animated shorts produced by various animation studios,Visionsprovides audiences with a glimpse of the unlimited potential of theStar Warsgalaxy.Star Wars: Visionsepisodes aren’t necessarily considered canon, but that doesn’t mean that the concepts and ideas introduced in these shorts can never become part ofStar Wars’official lore, including an unusual double-bladed lightsaber.

Double-bladed lightsabersare still relatively rare inStar Wars.In canon, they’re mostly wielded by Force-users affiliated with the dark side. Darth Maul famously introduced the design in live-action inStar Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace, and Darth Vader’s Inquisitors use double-bladed “helicopter” lightsabers. There are some exceptions – traditionally, the Jedi Temple guards carried yellow double-bladed lightsabers, and former Jedi Master turned traitor Pong Krell, for instance, wielded two double-bladed lightsabers inStar Wars: The Clone Wars. Still, none of those are like the one introduced inStar Wars: Visionsseason 2.

As she engages in a duel with her former mentor,Lola reveals that she left the Sithand the darkness behind, and soon exposes the truth about her lightsaber. Not only is it double-bladed, buteach blade has a different color: red and yellow.

11 Best Double-Bladed Lightsabers In Star Wars, Ranked

Star Was canon and Legends include a plethora of double-bladed lightsabers, but which characters in both continuities have the best ones?

This dual-color combo is unlike anything ever introduced inStar Wars.Of course, it’s well-knownthat lightsaber colors mean something inStar Wars.Though most Jedi use blue or green, some have wielded purple or white lightsabers, too. Jedi Temple guards traditionally wielded yellow blades. Red is the color of the Sith.Ahsokaintroduced orange lightsabers into the mix, as used by Baylan Skoll and his apprentice, Shin Hati. Never before has a lightsaber produced two different colored blades, however. As such, Lola’s lightsaber must be powered by two separate kyber crystals.

What Lola’s Double-Bladed Lightsaber Meant For Her Unique Force Journey

Color is an important aspect of Lola’s character. As an artist, she expresses herself and her connection with the Force through color. Having two separate lightsaber blades makes sense. It represents the past she’s turned away from and the future she’s building for herself. Red is a way to remember the darkness that she’s shunned. Yellow, wielded by characters with unusual relationships with the Force and who have experienced the dark side, like Asajj Ventress and Rey Skywalker, is the perfect primary color for someone like Lola.

InStar WarsLegends, the branch ofStar Warsstorytelling no longer considered canon, one ancient Jedi purified a red lightsaber crystal, and it turned yellow (in canon, purified kyber crystals tend to turn white). Perhaps that was the inspiration for Lola’s lightsaber, too.Maybe she’d purified one of her kyber crystals, and now that she’s defeated her Sith Master, she’ll have the strength she needs to purify the other one, too. Whatever the case may be,Star Wars: Visionscertainly provides an interesting new perspective.
