While Patrick Stewart’sMCUreturn is cause for excitement, it’s a shame that he’ll miss crossing paths with thisDeadpool & Wolverinevillain. All eyes are on Marvel as they’re in the process ofconfirming every member of theAvengers: Doomsdaycast. During a livestream in late March, the studio announced the first set of 27 actorswho will be appearing in the film next year. Though many of the initial names were characters who were already expected to be inDoomsday, there were some surprise announcements hidden among them.
Avengers: Doomsdaywill notably markthe return of some original X-Men actorsto the big screen. Ian McKellan’s Magneto, Alan Cumming’s Nightcrawler, James Marsden’s Cyclops, and Rebecca Romijn’s Mystique will all be making their MCU debut, while Kelsey Grammer’s Beast will be returning for the first time since his post-credits cameo in 2023’sThe Marvels. Of course, Magneto would not be complete without Professor X, which makes Stewart’s confirmed return as the character all the more exciting. However, the franchise could’ve done with his return much sooner when it comes to oneDeadpool & Wolverineplotline.

Patrick Stewart’s Return As Professor X In Avengers: Doomsday Is A Major Moment For The MCU
Stewart famously played the older version of Professor X throughout Fox’sX-Menfilms. He’s become a legend in the superhero genre because of it, and although the Fox X-Men universe is over, many fans still associate him with the character to this day. When the MCU announced that they were going to adapt the X-Men into the main universe, it was expected that the characters were going to be recast. The confirmed return of some original X-Men actors likely means thatthey’ll appear inAvengers: Doomsdayas universal variants, but it’s still a major casting moment for the MCU.
10 Harsh Realities Of Rewatching Patrick Stewart’s 8 Movie Appearances As Professor X
Sir Patrick Stewart as Charles Xavier is one of the all-time greatest superhero performances, but his movie appearances aren’t perfect.
Stewart previously made a cameo in 2022’sDoctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madnessas a Professor X variant who was part of the Illuminati. As quickly as viewers could get excited about his appearance though,he and the rest of the Illuminati were swiftly killed by Scarlet Witch. This makes Stewart’sDoomsdayreturn feel particularly special as it’ll be a chance for his character’s MCU redemption. The Professor X that appeared inMultiverse of Madnessobviously wasn’t the one that fans grew to love, but now he gets to appear alongside his original team again.

Deadpool & Wolverine’s Story Means The Timing Of Stewart’s Return Comes Just Too Late
While Stewart’s return is great news, it came slightly too late.Cassandra Nova was introducedas the main villain ofDeadpool & Wolverinewho intended to destroy timelines and rule the Void after being imprisoned there. Her actions were driven by how much she missed her brother, who happened to be none other than Charles Xavier. There were some great cameos in the film, but Professor X was not one of them. Now that fans know that Charles’ return was in the works this whole time, it’s a shame that he didn’t get to meet his twin sister.
Seeing the two siblings interact on screen would’ve been a great MCU moment. His absence ultimately made sense sinceDeadpool & Wolverinewas already filled with other narratives, but Professor X could’ve brought an extra layer to Cassandra’s story. Even if they do end up interacting inDoomsdayor the future MCU, it won’t hold the same meaning sincethe iteration of her who was defined by her brother’s absence is now dead. Hopefully, whatever Marvel has in the works for Stewart’s character inDoomsdaywill hold just as much emotional weight as his missedDeadpool & Wolverineplot.
