The X-Men are no strangers to death, and while comic characters rarely stay gone forever, Rogue and Cyclops taking the reins is a telltale sign that Magneto and Professor X’s days in the spotlight are ending.

In a preview forX-Men#10 by Jed MacKay and Netho Diaz, when the X-Men are raided by ONE, it’s revealed that Magneto’s illness linked to his resurrection, R-LDS, is causing him to lose control of his powers.

However,a side effect of Xavier using his power is that it will gradually kill him. The demise of both Xavier and Magneto would mean an end to the numerous decades the two shared as the main figureheads of the X-Men.

Marvel is building up the next mutant leaders, replacing Magneto and Xavier asCyclops and Rogue are now taking on the classic dynamic of friends-to-enemiesthat Magneto and Charles Xavier once had. Cyclops has grown to respect Magneto and bonds with him over their shared aspirations for the mutant cause while distancing himself from Xavier. In contrast, Rouge has affirmed that she still has faith in Xavier’s dream despite his morally gray status. After Rogue and Cyclops’ teams fight at Gaymalkin prison, it’s clear that the two are following their former mentor and enemy’s path before Charles and Magneto meet their ends.
