Below Deck Sailing Yachtseason 5 may have been a letdown, but Captain Glenn Shephard has been a long-standing part of the show andshouldn’t be fired as Captain after one bad seasonof the series. Captain Glenn, who’s been the lead of Parsifal III both on and off screen for years, has become one of the most familiar faces in the franchise, especially to those who watchBelow Deck Sailing Yacht.Though the waters were tough for the crew throughoutBelow Deck Sailing Yachtseason 5, Captain Glenn was still able to keep things on track for his crew.

Captain Glenn, who is theoriginal captain ofBelow Deck Sailing Yacht, has been a huge part of the series. The captain of Parsifal III,Glenn has been a fixture of the franchise’s second-youngest series. While viewers may be more familiar with Captain Sandy Yawn ofBelow Deck Mediterraneanor even Captain Lee Rosbach, formerly ofBelow Deck, theBDSYcaptain has been a similarly beloved figure in the franchise. Throughout the last five seasons ofBelow Deck Sailing Yacht, viewers have watched as Captain Glenn’s navigated his crew through some incredibly difficult charter seasons personally and professionally.

Captain Glenn had a tough timethroughoutBelow Deck Sailing Yachtseason 5 on both personal and professional levels. While his work as the captain wasn’t in question, his leadership did leave something to be desired, at least for me. Watching Captain Glenn,it was clear to me that he had an affinity for his longtime First Officer Gary King, who the majority ofBelow Deckfans weren’t happy to see back on the show. While he was supportive of Gary, Captain Glenn found disdain for Chief Stew Daisy Kelliher, another longtime part of the show, due to her performance.

BetweenGlenn’s support of Gary and distaste for Daisy, there was a lot ofBelow Deckfan frustration over the way the captain was managing his crew. Even so, the majority of the issues that Glenn critiqued during the season were valid, and his charter season was successful despite his penchant for favoritism.Captain Glenn’s abilities aboard Parsifal III are undeniable, and knowing that he’s a good captain makes it clear that he should remain a part of the series. Captain Glenn’s familiar face and fascinating level of knowledge about sailing yachts should be enough to keep him aboard.

8Captain Glenn Is The Face Of BDSY

He’s A Recognizable Figure

Although there are crew members who have been a major part ofBelow Deck Sailing Yachtthrough the years, the person with the longest run on the show is Captain Glenn. As the Captain of Parsifal III both during theBelow Deckseason and in the off-season,Glenn has the most exposuresurrounding the sailing yacht of any crew member. Throughout the years,Glenn has become more of a memorable face than other crew memberswho come and go on the show.

7Captain Glenn Always Treats The Crew With Respect

He’s Easy To Work With

While Captain Glenn knows what he’s doing aboard Parsifal III and has a higher level of expertise than anyone else on board, he’s not one to rub his knowledge in other people’s faces. As the most skilled aboard Parsifal III,Captain Glenn is known for treating his staff respectfullyand understands that he’s the person others are looking to for an example of how they’re meant to act on board.Glenn makes himself easy to work with, as he’s able to let go of minor annoyances even when they bother him.

Glenn’s ability to work through his grievances and offer feedback rather than being harsh or snappy with the crew sets him apart from otherBelow Deckcaptains, and other captains in general. Though Glenn has complaints in the same way otherBelow Deckcaptains do, he’s outwardly respectful to them regardless.Glenn’s easy to work with, which is a rare find.

6Captain Glenn Doesn’t Get Involved With The Crew Like Other Below Deck Captains

He Stays In His Lane

Although Glenn knows what’s happening aboard Parsifal III, he doesn’t typically involve himself in the drama of the crew unless it’s entirely necessary. Captain Glenn has been a yachtie for long enough to know how much drama goes down between the crew members throughout the charter season, and it’s safe to say he’s had his fair share of drama in his younger years. Now,Glenn’s often far away from the crew dramaunless there’s a need for him to be involved.

While some captains like to put themselves in the middle of drama or involve themselves in some ways,Glenn typically makes himself scarce in that realm. Though he can get involved if needed, Glenn usually knows how to let others handle their problems. He’s aware that staying in his lane, especially on aBelow Deckshow, is often the better choice.

5Captain Glenn Is Likeable

He’s Not Difficult To Watch

Althoughsome have taken issue with Captain Glennin recent seasons, for the most part I find him to be quite likeable.Glenn is often the level of removed that he needs to be in order to poke fun and enjoy the crew drama, and he shares his own stories to humanize him on camera. As a captain, Glenn is knowledgeable and often makes it clear that he knows what he’s talking about, but doesn’t antagonize his crew with his knowledge.

While I don’t think Glenn is usually the type to indulge in drama anyway, it’s nice to see him rarely engage in the crew’s antics. Though captains normally stay away from the fray,Glenn doesn’t even seem to know when there’s drama going onsome of the time. It’s clear that he’s easy-going, which makes me like him even more.

He’s Always Able To Contribute To The Conversation

Throughout his time onBelow Deck Sailing Yacht, Glenn has been open about the way things have been in his past experiences and shared stories about past crews he’s worked with frequently. While I don’t always love the way captains indulge in their past tales,I love hearing Captain Glenn talk about his experiencesbecause of the level of humor he’s able to inject into his stories. Glenn often shares stories that make him seem more human, and reassure his crew that he’s been in their shoes.

I thinkGlenn’s stories from his expansive pastin the industry make him far more relatable than some otherBelow Deckcaptains. While they may push the crew to think less of his authority in some moments,Glenn’s been able to make it clear that he knows where they’ve been. Relating to his humorous moments and understanding where he’s come from is good for the crew.

3Captain Glenn Is Typically A Fair Captain

He’s Not Usually Overly Emotional In His Decisions

Throughout his time onBelow Deck Sailing Yacht, Captain Glenn has been able to be a generally fair leader, which makes him more valuable to the crew. While some captains or department heads find themselves frustrated and make decisions out of anger or irritation,Captain Glenn is able to look at things fairly and rationally. While he’s often had to make tough decisions during charter seasons, Glenn has done a great job at being unbiased in those choices.

While Glenn has done a decent job at maintaining his relationships with his crew, the fact that he’s fair is something that resonates with everyone, even those he hasn’t stayed connected with. As a sailing yacht captain, Glenn has to be able to remove his judgment from his perspective to make informed decisions. He’s able to be a more even-keeled decision-makerbecause of his ability to remove emotion from his thought process.

2Captain Glenn Can Function Without Gary King’s Help

He Can Handle The Worst Circumstances

AlthoughGary has been Captain Glenn’s right-hand manfor the last several years during theBelow Deck Sailing Yachtseason and otherwise, he appears to have moved on from the Parsifal III crew. While there’s not a lot of information about this, Gary’s shared that he’s working on other vessels and others have all but confirmed he won’t be returning toBelow Deck Sailing Yachtseason 6. While Captain Glenn may be sad to see Gary moving on,he’s more than capable of handling Parsifal III without Gary’s help.

Gary’s contribution to Parsifal III as the First Officer was major throughout the last few years. Even so,Glenn is a knowledgeable and understanding captainwho can not only do the job himself, but find someone suitable to replace Gary. Despite knowing that Glenn will be supportive of Gary in the future, Glenn should remain onBDSYwithout him.

1Captain Glenn Lets The Crew Shine On BDSY

He Doesn’t Need The Spotlight

AlthoughCaptain Glenn is typically seenfrom episode to episode onBelow Deck Sailing Yacht, he really lets the crew shine in a way I admire. Captain Glenn is the brains behind the operation and has a great sense of leadership, which makes it even more admirable that he stands back and lets the crew be complimented. Sharing his own wins with the crew,Captain Glenn is often the yacht crew’s biggest cheerleader, even when he has to critique them.

Knowing thatCaptain Glenn will always be supportive and kind to his crew, it’d be a shame to see him leaveBelow Deck Sailing Yachtanytime soon. Even with the issues he’s faced with some crew members, Captain Glenn has been great to watch. His respect and adoration for his yachties onBelow Deck Sailing Yachtis something others should aspire for.
