What Parish’s Cancelation Means For Its Main Star
This Could Have Been A Good Opportunity for Esposito To Star
AMC was not explicit about their reason for cancelingParishafter just one season. The show’s performance, however, makes the cancellation fairly unsurprising.Parishreceived poor reviewsupon its release, garnering a 33% Tomatometer among 21 critics. The audience Popcornmeter was not nearly as rotten, standing at 76% approval. The general audience’s positivity towards the show must not have been enough forParish, however, as a cancellation just months after the show’s conclusion likely indicates low ratings.
Parish Ending Explained
Parish season 1 has finally come to a close, and here’s what happened in the finale and what it all means for Giancarlo Esposito’s Gray Parish.
Parish’s negative reviews and cancellation were unfortunate, as they could have started an exciting new crime show for Esposito. The actor received high praise for his work onBreaking BadandBetter Call Saul, but it is rare to see Esposito in a leading role.Even in the absence ofParish, Esposito’s career will stay busy over the coming years. Just this year,he had roles inThe Boysseason 4 andMegalopolisand has upcoming parts inThe Residence,Poker Face, and the movieCaptain America: Brave New World.

Parish’s Poor Reviews Probably Hurt Its Renewal Chances
Unpacking the Show’s Negative Reviews
Given the strength of its main star, it is confounding how underwhelmingParishcould be. Its critics, however, ribbed the series for its use of genre clichés and lack of originality in the writing. I thinkVariety’s Aramide Tinubu put it succinctly “that even the prowess of Esposito can’t save it from feeling like a cobbled-together journey with no distinct destination.” As such,Parishwill, unfortunately, go down in the books as a show that failed to deliver on a promising premise and got the early boot.
