Warning: Contains spoilers for Chainsaw Man chapter #197Throughout the entirety ofChainsaw ManPart Two’s meticulously crafted narrative, the mysterious and intimidating presence of the Death Devil loomed over the events of the series. From the moment Denji ran into Yoshida on the street, every traumatizing development or encounter with a new devil has been part of a calculated schemeto power up the manga’s protagonists enough to defeat the final Horseman.

Recent terrifying devilshave done well to remind the fan base thatChainsaw Manis, in fact, a horror manga, and readers expected the Death Devil to be as horrifying as her name implies. However, the latest chapter #197, titled “3 Seconds”, puts Death’s fighting prowess on full display, and she’s nothing like anyone expected. Rather than monstrous feats, readers are met with mediocre boxing and a touch of overconfidence. The final Horseman Devil does have one power though, and it is absolutely terrifying.

The Death Devil Loses Her Debut Fight, But Shows a Terrifying Power

The Devil With the Most Frightening Name Isn’t As Expected

Chainsaw Man’s power system isn’t overly complex. The more a concept is feared, the stronger a devil sharing the name of that concept or thing becomes, which is whythe Death Devil’s incredible lack of strength is somewhat shocking. There should be no concept feared more by humanity, yet the supposedHorseman of the Apocalypseis absolutely and literally dismantled in her debut fight with the Chainsaw Man impostor. However, she does show off one potentially horrifying ability.

After being sliced into pieces, her hand grabs the leg of a boy standing in the school yard andinstantly drains the life from his body, healing the Death Devil’s wounds. The ability is fitting for her character, as the other Horsemen like Makima and Yoru also have abilities closely tied with their names. Makima was able to control the minds of those she felt were inferior, while Yoru is able to create weapons from anything she perceives as belonging to her.

In battle, though, it’s unclear just how useful this power can be. Unless she’s erased by Chainsaw Man’s power, it’s likely she can’t ever fully die, though her actual fighting ability doesn’t seem to pose much of a threat. Which leads to another question on readers' minds: why is the Death Devil so weak?

The Death Devil Is Far Weaker Than Her Name Suggests

The Latest Horseman Devil Doesn’t Strike as Much Fear as She Should

Based onChainsaw Man’s own rules, the Death Devil should be the most powerful devil in existence, but throughout her short time in the series, she isn’t intimidating in the slightest. Even she is surprised and begins crying out for help after losing so badly to the Chainsaw Man impostor in the latest chapter. There may be a reason she’s so underpowered, though, and it likely has to do with the current state ofChainsaw Man’s world.

Previous chapters have made it a point to show that death has become ordinary, everyday scenery in the series. Despite continuous tragedies, the people of Tokyo continue about their lives, going to work and worrying about celebrity scandals. There’s a chance the current state of the world has become so terrible, thanks to the schemes of Fami and Barem, that people just don’t fear death like they used to,weakening the Death Devil significantly.
