The iconic Batman villain Clayface has been cast for James Gunn’sDC Universe, with the actor set to play the role shedding light on more specifics about them joining the new superhero reboot. The first project to come out ofthe DC Universe’s Chapter 1: “Gods and Monsters” TV shows and movie slatewill be the animatedCreature Commandosseries, giving the fans a taste of Gunn’s new continuity. With animation, it is not uncommon for actors to have multiple roles to voice, and that is exactly what is happening inCreature Commandos.

In an interview onRotten Tomatoes TV,Alan Tudyk, who is joiningCreature Commandosas Doctor Phosphorus, revealed that he will also be voicing Clayface in the animated series. While Clayface’s role in the series is being kept under wraps, Tudyk shared the following about getting to play the DC villain once more, having already voiced a different version of him in theHarley Quinnanimated series previously:

The other DC villains that I play are in ‘Harley Quinn,’ which is very comedic. It’s a straight-up comedy, whereas this one is a drama that is funny, that has humorous elements within it, but it has action, drama, and passion. Clayface is a moron. I play, actually, Clayface in this series…and in this, Clayface is a killer. We have a huge fight, and he’s a homicidal maniac."

So it’s the same character, that’s what’s really cool about DC. I get to play the same character two completely different ways, and I like them both. It’s really nice that James let me play Clayface. I was so happy. I didn’t even have to ask, I was going to ask. When I saw it in there, he let me know that I got to do it.

What Clayface’s Casting Means For The DCU

When Gunn’s DC Universe was first revealed,it was made clear that actors who get cast as a character in the animated property will also be playing their live-action counterparts in future projects tied to the franchise. That is already the case with a handful of characters who will be jumping back and forth between live-action and animation, from Viola Davis' Amanda Waller and Steve Agee’s John Economos to new faces like Rick Flag Sr., who will be played byFrank Grillo inCreature Commandos.

26 DCU Rumors That James Gunn Has Debunked So Far

James Gunn has been very active on social media as DC Studios' co-CEO, and he has debunked several major DCU rumors about Superman, Batman, and more.

With Tudyk now confirmed to play both Doctor Phosphorus and Clayface, it seems entirely possible he could play both in live-action as well. That said, it’s also crucial to take into account that these characters would either require CGI/VFX or prosthetics, meaning that Tudyk’s face wouldn’t necessarily be seen in even the live-action version of the roles, which makes the prospect of him playing both more viable. This appears to also be why Sean Gunn is able to play both G.I. Robot and Weasel while also taking on the role of Maxwell Lord inSuperman.

DC Universe

The DC Universe is one of the biggest comic book franchises and often competes with Marvel. DC Comics started as National Allied Publications, founded by Malcolm Wheeler-Nicholson in 1935. Since then, the franchise has exploded with thousands of comic books, movies, TV shows, and video games. 2013 marked the beginning of the most recent iteration of the superheroes, with Zack Snyder introducing Henry Cavill as Superman. After several movies with mixed reviews, DC underwent a soft reboot under the helm of James Gunn and Peter Safran.
