Miguel and Robby fistbumping after their fight in Cobra Kai season 6 part 1

Some time before the show’s premiere,Screen Rantinterviewed Xolo Maridueña, Tanner Buchanan, Mary Mouser, Jacob Bertrand, Peyton List, and Gianni DeCenzo to discussCobra Kaiseason 6 part 2, Robby and Miguel’s fight in the part 1 finale, how Sam is dealing with Tory’s decision to turn away from her friends, and the high-stakes fallout to come from Demetri and Hawk’s friendship.

Buchanan & Maridueña Were Thrilled To Have Robby & Miguel Fight In A Different Context

Screen Rant: Tanner and Xolo, we alluded to it briefly the last time we talked, but you guys go back to fighting in order to see who becomes team captain. Obviously, unlike before, there’s no hatred, necessarily, there’s just different motivations going on. What was it like stepping into that sequence, though, and having to square off against one another again?

Tanner Buchanan: It was fun, every encounter, I feel like —

Xolo Maridueña: You don’t sound that convinced. “It was fun, I guess?” [Laughs]

Tanner Buchanan: [Laughs] It was fun. I don’t feel like we ever got to have a fight where the two characters weren’t so angry at each other. I know there were a lot of stakes, and we both really wanted it, but this was the first fight that we weren’t mad at each other.

Xolo Maridueña: We were just trying to do well.

Tanner Buchanan: Yeah, just genuinely do well. So, it was really fun to have that kind of motivation of just having fun, and wanting what’s best for our characters, rather than just being angry at each other and trying to kill each other.

Xolo Maridueña: No interruptions. No buddies getting each other out of the fight.

Xolo Maridueña: No balcony.

Tanner Buchanan: Yeah, we stayed on the ground this time.

Xolo Maridueña: Stayed on the ground this time, it was really fun. I remember wrapping up and hugging Tanner, but even more fun than the fight — well, not even more fun, but when filming that, we got to play a hype-up song. And Tanner was like, “I don’t know what to play. You just play it.” [Chuckles] So, I had the speaker, and I played “Backstreet Freestyle” by Kendrick Lamar, and it was the most fun thing to walk out to “Martin had a dream”, and we’re about to fight. [Laughs]

Tanner Buchanan: But the funny thing is we walked out together. We didn’t walk out separately, we walked out together.

Xolo Maridueña: Yeah, like we were both about to do a dance. [Chuckles]

Sam Has “A Lot Of Hurt” After Tory’s Team Switching

“…for Sam, it was coming from a different place now.”

Peyton and Mary, I’d like to turn to you two next. So, we see you two get to go against each other again. But, obviously, Tory has something very different going on after the loss of her mother. And, unlike Miguel and Robby, you two don’t get to finish your fight. And now, Tory is back with Cobra Kai. Is that going to lead to something bigger going into the Sekai Taikai between you two heading into part 2?

Mary Mouser: I think every time that we’ve fought against one another is another cut deeper. It has deepened that wound to the point of not necessarily knowing if it was possible to be healed, and all the healing that we got to do for those first few episodes of being connected — which we were both really excited about — was a new challenge. Trying to play friends was a new challenge for us. So, I thought that going back to having tension would feel more natural, but after having that closeness, it was even harder for me to tackle as an actor. So, I felt, for Sam, it was coming from a different place now. I think the come from is really important. I think the come from before was it was easy to put the face of a villain on Tory, because she was a scapegoat for Sam. But getting to know Tory as a three-dimensional person, the next time that they run into each other, it’s a lot of hurt.

Demetri & Hawk’s Fallout Is Building To Some Heavy Consequences

“Almost at the height of a balcony.”

Gianni and Jacob, I’d like to turn to you guys next. You two also have beef heading into the Sekai Taikai, as you guys are diverging as friends. But also, Hawk retroactively gets the position on the team after initially losing to Demetri. So, what can we expect going into part 2 from you two now that you sort of have different ideas about how you landed on the team?

Jacob Bertrand: Well, I’ll tell you this, Demetri doesn’t stop yapping about MIT. [Chuckles]

Gianni DeCenzo: Dude, he does not. It’s really awkward. [Laughs] It’s really awkward to be like, “Screw you, I’m going to Barcelona,” and then you’re also there. [Laughs] But yeah, there’s a lot on the line here for these guys, really testing their friendship. You wouldn’t think that it could get any worse than what they’ve gone through in the past. But I mean, this is kind of make or break for the Binary Bros, and it gets to their heads. I would say Demetri more so, because he can’t handle change.

Jacob Bertrand: Yeah, I’ll say that Demetri causes Hawk to fall a great distance.

Mary Mouser: Almost at the height of a balcony?

Xolo Maridueña: Almost.

Gianni DeCenzo: It is true.

Jacob Bertrand: I see it coming though, so it’s not as bad.

Xolo Maridueña: It was face-first, so you could put your hands out. [Laughs]

Jacob Bertrand: But it’s still by Demetri’s hand, or foot.

Gianni DeCenzo: Well, not hand, yeah.
