There have been rumors of FromSoftware potentially working on a remaster forDark Souls 3, making it the second game in theDark Soulsseries to get a remaster. Released all the way back in 2016,Dark Souls 3has been the end point of the story for a while, and theDark Soulsseries hasn’t been touched since 2018 with the first title’s remaster. People have been calling for a return to theDark Soulsseries, with some asking for a fourth game in the series to bring it back in a big way.

Dark Souls 3has been the most successful game in the series, and does feel like a culmination of everything FromSoftware had learned from the series at that point. The game looked better than anything released beforehand by the studio, played better with Weapon Arts, and still has some of the best bosses in FromSoftware’s award-winning library. Story-wise,the game also acts as a great entry point into theDark Soulsseries, with the world folding in on itself due to the constant Linking of Fire, but despite all its pros, it’s not a game that needs a remaster.

Forget Remaster Rumors, Dark Souls 3 Is Still Great

And The Current Version Would Be A Lot Cheaper Than A Remaster

FromSoftware titles have always been known for prioritizing art direction over graphical fidelity. Outside the combat and rich but often confusing lore, art direction is where FromSoftware games shine; however, that does mean that the games don’t look like they have evolved from a graphical standpoint that much. There was a huge jump, graphics wise, fromDark Souls 2toBloodborne, but there hasn’t been one in the Soulsborne anthology since. Although it does look better, the difference in graphical fidelity betweenDS3and thelaudedElden Ringisn’t huge.

WhileDS3came from the mind of Hidetaka Miyazaki,Elden Ringwas a collaborative effort between Miyazaki and George R. R. Martin.

Tarnished from Elden Ring DLC with the Marika statue in the background.

A large reason for this is thatDark Souls 3still looks great today, and although it can look too gray a lot of the time, its art direction really helps it age gracefully.Elden Ringalso prioritizes size over improving its graphics massively compared to prior titles, and that is a worthwhile sacrifice given how much there is to explore in the Lands Between. This all keepsDark Souls 3from looking too dated, and it can be played on PS5 with an upscaled resolution and 60FPS, which makes it look better than ever.

Gameplay wise,DS3still holds up well, even thoughElden Ringfeels like a natural evolution of theDark Soulsseries;where the game still shines over a lot of other Soulsborne titles is its bosses. The Soul of Cinder, The Twin Princes, Sister Friede, andSlave Knight Gaelare still some of the best boss fights that FromSoftware has made, and these fights in particular are always worth coming back to. These aren’t the only great bosses in the game either, and the bosses ofElden Ringstill get compared to the quality ofDS3’s toughest battles.

Dark Souls 3 Ending Usurpation

Bloodborne On PC Needs FromSoft’s Attention Instead

Dark Souls 3 Is Probably The Last Game That Needs A Remaster

The FromSoftware fanbase has been calling forBloodborneto come to PCfor years now, and with the game being ten years old next year, it feels like it might never happen. This could still come in the form of a remaster with 60FPS gameplay and some updated graphics, or the game could get a full,Demon Souls-style remake when the PS6 comes out. Either way,Bloodborneneeds some love, since very little has been done with the IPafter the release ofThe Old HuntersDLC.

Demon Soulswas not remade by FromSoftware and was recreated by Bluepoint Games instead.

Goddess of Scarlet Rot, Frenzied Flame and The Greater Will

Even if FromSoftware is unable to do anything with theBloodborneIP, due to it being owned by Sony, there are still other games that should get some love overDS3. Although it already got a remaster,a proper remake ofDS1wouldn’t be a bad idea, considering that the second half of the game massively dips in qualitycompared to the first half, largely due to time and budget restraints. Making a remake where this part of the game gets redone to match Miyazaki’s original vision would be amazing to see.

The Golden Braid talisman in Shadow of the Erdtree has been visible from the very beginning of Elden Ring and proves just how deep the game is.

AlthoughDark Souls 3remasteredwill probably be more popular, even aDS2remaster would be a better choice.DS2suffered from being in the transition between console generations, and could definitely do with a graphical update. Miyazaki didn’t directDS2either, and this could be a good way of trying to improve the original game to make it fit in better with the rest of the series and address a lot of its criticisms. A lot of people do likeDark Souls 2and the game could do with some more attention from FromSoftware.

Hopefully, DS3 Remastered Doesn’t Mean Dark Souls 4

Similar to the recentHorizon Zero Dawnremaster,it does feel like aDark Souls 3remaster would be unnecessary unless it leads into something else. Since FromSoftware has been away from theDark Soulsseries for some time, having releasedSekiro,Elden Ring, andmech genre standoutArmored Core 6sinceDS1 Remastered’s launch, it could mean that the studio is looking to get eyes back on theDark Soulsseries. ADark Souls 3remaster could meanDark Souls 4is in the works, but this would be a problem in and of itself.

All 12 Outer Gods In Elden Ring & Shadow Of The Erdtree (& Why They Matter)

There are 12 Outer Gods in Elden Ring and Shadow of the Erdtree, including the Formless Mother, The Sealed God of Scarlet Rot, and more.

Dark Souls 3is already the perfect endpoint for the series, and it should be left this way, especially with the popularity ofElden Ring.Dark Souls 3’s world is literally at its end, with time and space colliding into each other due to how many times the Fire has been Linked. The Ashen One even goes to the end of time to fight Slave Knight Gael and use his blood to paint a brand-new world. The only place the series can go is this new, painted world, and it would be difficult to have a newDark Soulsgame without the theme of Linking the Fire.

Ultimately,it feels as though aDark Souls 3remaster is just unnecessarywhen there are so many other titles that need some more attention from FromSoftware. It can already be played on almost all modern platforms, still looks great, plays well, and is the only game in theDark Soulsseries that fulfilled Miyazaki’s full vision. Compared to other titles that could do with some reworking or that need to come to other platforms,Dark Souls 3just doesn’t need a remaster.
