New images fromDexter: Original Sinare released, providing a first look at characters played by Patrick Dempsey and Sarah Michelle Gellar. The original Showtime series starring Michael C. Hall ran from 2006 to 2013 before returning for a revival withDexter: New Bloodin 2021. Now, aprequel series calledDexter: Original Sinis set to explore the titular serial killer’s origins as he takes on an internship job at Miami Metro in 1991, with actor Patrick Gibson taking on the lead role and Hall returning as narrator.
Now,EWshares new images fromDexter: Original Sin, unveiling the characters played by Dempsey and Gellar. Dempsey is rocking a mustache as Captain Aaron Spencer, head of Miami Metro PD’s homicide division, while Gellar has rubber gloves and a gurney at the ready as Tanya Martin, the chief of CSI. While few details are revealed about Spencer beyond that he will appear in flashbacks to the ’70s, Gellar teases in theEWarticle that Martin is the figure who accidentally “teachesDexter everything that he needs to know to really be a good serial killer.” That doesn’t mean, however, that she isn’t also very driven and good at her job:
“In the early ’90s it was very rare to have a female head of a department, let alone a female head of a department at Miami Metro. So she has to be really tough and a little bit one of the guys to be able to have made it that far and have thick skin.”
How They Could Factor Into The Story
The head of Miami Metro’s homicide division has played a role in essentially every previousseason ofDexter. They can be antagonistic, especially since they often serve as threats to Morgan’s true identity as a serial killer. Maria LaGuerta (Luna Lauren Velez), for example, becomes a prime antagonist in later seasons as she unravels various clues leading to his murderous instincts. It’s very possible that Spencer will occupy a similar role and will begin picking up on Dexter’s dark desires.
Dexter: Original Sin’s cast includes younger versions of characters like Debra Morgan (Molly Brown), Vince Masuka (Alex Shimizu), Angel Batista (James Martinez), and Maria LaGuerta (Christina Milian), all of whom work at Miami Metro in the original show. Christian Slater also appears as Harry Morgan.
As forGellar’sDexter: Original Sincharacter, she could help to explain aspects of the orignal show regarding how Dexter is able to avoid leaving evidence at crime scenes. While Dexter is already a skilled killer in the mothership series, the prequel has an opportunity to show how he became this meticulous and careful. Gellar’s character, it seems, will play an important role in this regard.

The challenge of any prequel or spinoff is recapturing what made the original series so beloved while also feeling distinct and fresh. Miami Metro and the colorful characters who worked there were aspects of the originalDexterthat really helped the show succeed, and Spencer and Martin could be the perfect balance between the old and the new.

Dexter: Resurrection was announced at 2024’s SDCC, and Michael C. Hall is set to reprise his role in the sophomore season of New Blood.
Since neither character is seen or mentioned in the original show, however, it’s also fitting to worry about whether they will reach the end ofDexter: Original Sinalive. Whether they become early targets of Gibson’s character or another serial killer, however, remains to be seen.
