In a lot of cutscenes with villagers, there are a few options a player can choose that will actually affect their friendship level with that villager.Most of the options that would hurt a player’s friendship with a villager are pretty clear to pick out,though most only deduct 10 to 50 friendship points. For certain marriage candidates, like Sebastian, there actually isn’t a wrong option players can choose during their cutscenes that would negatively affect their relationship – but that’s not the case for every villager.
Penny, for example, is the easiest marriage candidate to lose favor with. During her eight-heart event, when the schoolteacher starts to see a more serious future with the farmer, she asks the farmer to join her, Vincent, and Jas on their field trip and be a guest speaker.Choosing the option, “No… I can’t stand kids,” will automatically end the cutscene and subtract 1,500 friendshippoints between the two, immediately dropping them back down to two hearts with Penny. This is the most extreme possibility and the only option in the game that will effectively ruin a relationship.
Other candidates, like Leah and Abigail, will take significant offense to certain answers (though none as extreme as Penny).Players lose 100 friendship points if they try to kiss Leah during her two-heart event, and Abigail will be similarly offended if the player tells her the mines are too dangerous for her. Lewis and Marnie will also lose 100 friendship points with the farmer if they threaten to expose their affair, though these are the only other serious offenses.

Other methods, like talking regularly with the villagers, taking them to a movie, and completing an item delivery request will also contribute to increasing their hearts. Treating the villager to a loved movie (so long as the movie theater is open) willreward the player with 200 friendship points – and an additional 50 can be added by buying them a snack they like. TheGolden Pumpkin,Prismatic Shard,Pearl,Magic Rock Candy, andRabbit’s Footare also all universally loved gifts, awarding the player 80 friendship points each time.
