As one of the former stars of the Marvel Cinematic Universe is boarding James Gunn’sDC Universe, theCreature Commandosactor gets candid about the different experiences. While 2025 will kick off the DC Universe’s movie era, fans will be getting a taste of the franchise throughCreature Commandoswhen it premieres on Max. Many actors have already joined the franchise, and for some of them,Gunn’s DC Universeis another go with the superhero genre, with a handful of MCU actors also coming over for his reboot.
Screen Rantrecently interviewed Frank Grillo for theCreature CommandosTV show, where he was also asked about his take on having been part of two major superhero franchises like the DC Universe and the MCU. When responding to the question of what has been the most rewarding aspect of jumping between live-action and animation for DC Studios, Grillo stressed that it is the fact that he gets to be part of the process from the beginning, stating the following:

Frank Grillo: It’s just being really involved in such a great way from the beginning, soI have a chance to be in the embryotic stages of this in a big capacity, and not just used as plot device and then shunned away.So in this thing, you can’t do it without Rick Flag Sr., the way James has set it up, and that is really, to me, important, and I’m grateful for it. I take it very seriously. I tell James and Peter this all the time, whatever you guys got planned, I’m game.
What Frank Grillo’s DCU/MCU Comments Mean
Even though Rick Flag Sr. may be a lesser-known DC character in comparison to Marvel’s Crossbones,it’s clear that Grillo is feeling more fulfillment about his role in Gunn’s DC Universe. Despite having a substantial role inCaptain America: The Winter Soldier, the MCU quickly got rid of the character byCaptain America: Civil War, limiting the significance he could have on its overarching story. With the DC Universe, Grillo gets to jump back and forth between DC Universe movies and TV shows, both in live-action and animation, starting with leadingtheCreature Commandoscast.
While Grillo has voiced Crossbones through Marvel Studios’What If…?, the character never got a chance to properly shine in the MCU. Thankfully, from what is known about Grillo’s role in the DC Universe, Gunn is letting Flag Sr. be a more extensive and fleshed-out character with a detailed storyline, which includes appearing inPeacemakerseason 2next year, too.

Our Take On Frank Grillo’s DCU/MCU Comments
Given Grillo’s DC Universe character is leading the way for the franchise with a key role in its first release, his excitement about playing the role makes sense. Thoughthe DC Universe’s Chapter 1: “Gods and Monsters"hasn’t even started,Grillo is already lined up to appear in not one but three DC Universe projects in 2025, which includes theSupermanmovie, giving Flag Sr. plenty to do in the reboot. AsCreature Commandoswill kick off Flag Sr.’s saga in the DC Universe, it will be exciting to see how his arc progresses through his other upcoming appearances.
Creature Commandosseason 1, episodes 1 and 2, are set to premiere on Thursday, December 5, followed by weekly releases on Max.
