MoreAlien vs. Predatormovies could be on the way, combining characters from the new subfranchises spawned byPreyandAlien: Romulus. The original crossover franchise between theAlienmovies and thePredatormovieskicked off withAvPin 2004 and was followed by a sequel subtitledRequiemin 2007. WhileAvP 3has so far failed to come to fruition, both franchises are still going strong with the 2022 prequelPreybeing followed byPredator: Badlandsand 2024’sRomulusbecoming the second highest-grossing movie in the franchise.

The Hollywood Reporterrecently sat down for an interview with 20th Century president Steve Asbell. During their conversation, he touched on the success of both franchises and the possibility of theAlien vs. Predatorsubfranchise continuing in the wake of their success. In a word, he saida newAvPmovie would “probably” happen, though “we haven’t gotten to that point.” He adds that such a movie would “be organically created out of these two franchises” and that the characters who viewers have fallen in love with from both franchises “will combine.” Read Asbell’s full quote below:

A scarred Xenomorph snarls in an underground lair in Alien Vs Predator

[You will] probably [see another Alien vs. Predator movie.] It wouldn’t be in the way you think. That’s the thing. Not in the way that it will just be called Alien vs. Predator or anything like the original movies. If we do this, they’ll be organically created out of these two franchises that we’ve continued with characters that we fall in love with and those characters will combine…perhaps. But we haven’t gotten to that point. And we’re not just going to bang it out.

What This Means For Alien vs. Predator 3

The Movie’s Timeline Might Get Complicated

While Asbell seems somewhat certain that there are plans to craft another crossover between the two sci-fi franchises, the exact form it will take remains unknown. However, at first blush, it seemsunlikely that any characters fromPreywould be able to returnin the movie. That movie was set in the year 1719, whereasRomulus' place between the first and second movies on the overallAlientimelinemeans that it is set in 2142, more than four centuries later.

ThePredatormovies typically take place in the present day, while theAlienmovies almost all take place in the distant future.

It seems more likely that, should such a crossover ever happen, it would feature characters from theupcomingPredator: Badlands, which is set in the future rather than being a historical period piece. The movie, which teams returningPreydirector Dan Trachtenberg with star Elle Fanning, ismuch more likely to introduce characters who can appear in some way in a crossoverwith the characters fromRomulus, though it will probably still take place many years before 2142.

Our Take On The Possible Alien vs. Predator Continuation

The Project Must Proceed With Caution

While the prospect of the current iterations of both franchises having a crossover is exciting, Asbell is probably wise to avoid deeming it a properAlien vs. Predatormovie. While interconnected universes like the Marvel Cinematic Universe can be successful and both original movies performed reasonably well at the box office,AvPearned a 22% Rotten Tomatoes score whileRequiemearned 12%, marking the lowest scores of either franchise.Continuing that franchise would welcome similar criticismas opposed to rebranding the crossover as a continuation of bothRomulusand thePrey/Badlandssubfranchises.
