Ubisoft has asked someStar Wars Outlawsplayers to reset their save files before the game has even officially launched. The new open-worldStar Warsgame is scheduled for release on August 30, but early access became available on August 27.Players who purchased the pricier Gold Edition of the game got to start playing the game early, in addition to other perks. For $109.99, players get the game and season pass, two cosmetic items, and a digital art book. Now it looks like the early access part of the perks might have backfired.

Pre-launch bugs have led to the game already receiving an update. This has, apparently, caused trouble for early access players. In an email shared on Reddit byJACOAE, Ubisoft tells players, “To best experience the Outer Rim, we rolled out a maintenance to make sure everyone is playing the latest version of the game.”

To this end, email recipients are asked to check that they’re playing the latest version of the game, Version 1.000.002.Once the correct version is confirmed, players are asked to start a new save file.Affected players are encouraged to “please start a new save to fully enjoy Star Wars Outlaws as our team intended.”

I’m Worried About Star Wars Outlaws After Learning This One Gameplay Detail

Star Wars Outlaws' Kay Vess may be a scoundrel, but she clearly has her limits, as new gameplay shows players may not have complete freedom.

Star Wars Outlaws Early Access Players May Be Forced To Start Over

Not All Players Are Affected

While Ubisoft doesn’t come out and say that all players need to reset their progress, the company heavily implies that not doing so can lead to problems. The email states, “If you continue on a prior save you will unfortunately face issues and progression blockers.” The “progression blockers” and “issues” seem to be referencing some players getting stuck in space following one of the game’s missions. The email was not sent to every early access player, though. It seems likely that the issue is platform-specific, withissue reports only coming in from PS5 users.

Fans are annoyed but not surprised, despiteStar Wars Outlawsotherwise being well received. The Reddit post is filled with comments urging others to stop paying for early access, claiming it’s frequently more akin to paying to beta test an unfinished game. Some specifically call out Ubisoft, which is known to have issues with its games at launch, typically because of their incredible scale. Ubisoft is one of many recent big game names that often seem to cave into the pressure of releasing games quickly, before they’re quite ready.Ubisoft often announces games too early, and seemingly puts them on too short of a deadline, resulting in technical issues.

Rumors about an open-worldStar Warsgamestarted circulating around January 2023, and an official announcement followed in June at the Xbox Games Showcase. It seems that the game could have used a bit more testing before releasing to players who spent extra to start the game early. On the other hand, waiting too long would also have hurt the game’s launch.Star Wars Outlawswill officially launch on August 30 to everyone, and hopefully by then most of the issues will be addressed. Ubisoft doesn’t have a great track record for bug-free releases, but it’s possible that the three-day head start will help smooth out issues.
