Primalseason 3 is the next chapter in Genndy Tartakovsky’s animated epic and there’s been some exciting updates about the upcoming season. Another one ofGenndy Tartakovsky’s beautifully animated productions,Primal, is an Adult Swim series set in an anachronistic and semi-fantastical version of prehistory where Tyrannosaurus Rexes live alongside Neanderthals. The two-season series follows one of these Neanderthals, the brutally strong and silent Spear, and his constant, and equally silent companion, Fang, a vicious T. rex. The pair form an unlikely bond and fight their way through beasts, monsters, and men to find a home.
Nearly a wordless series,Primaltells its story through gorgeous animation, incredible sound design, a transporting atmosphere, and some truly moving characterswho each have their own motivations and histories. Season 1 premiered on Adult Swim in October 2019 and has a 100% onRotten Tomatoes. Season 2 premiered in July 2022. It also has a 100% onRotten Tomatoesand is easily one ofthe best-animated TV shows of 2022. Tartakovsky Says Production Is Going Smoothly
After over a year of radio silence,Genndy Tartakovsky made some big announcements in September 2024toColliderright before the SCAD AnimationFest. Tartakovsky said aboutPrimalseason 3,
“It’s coming. I’m finishing up the 10th episode right now. And so we got 10 more half hours. We’re in production, and it’s gonna blow everybody’s socks off, I think.”
Those are some high expectations to put on himself, but if anyone can match them, it’s Tartakovsky. He also mentioned that they were halfway done with animation and that the storyboards were all nearly complete. Half the season is already animated and two episodes are in post-production. When asked if a 2025 release date was likely, Tartakovsky said,
“I would say yes.”

Season 3 Was Confirmed In 2023
Primalseason 3 was confirmed in June 2023after being officially renewed by Adult Swim, at which point Tartakovsky mentioned that there were big things in store for the next installment. About the renewal, Tartakovsky said (viaCollider),
“[Primal is] a contagious disease that I don’t ever want to cure… every episode flows out like an unstoppable force beyond my control.”
Though no release date has been announced, the show will likely premiere in 2025, considering how far along in production the show is.

Primal Is Primarily A Silent Show
Primalis primarily a silent show with only a few lines in the entire series. It’s difficult to tell who could return, particularly as so many characters die in the violent show. However, at the end ofPrimalseason 2, Mira is still alive. Her voice actress, Laëtitia Eïdo, rarely had to speak, but she could return. Prolific voice actor Fred Tatasciore played two characters inPrimaland though they both died, he could possibly return.

No story details forPrimalseason 3 have been released yet, butTartakovsky said the next season would be something new(viaComicBook),
“I have something in mind that is so spectacular I cannot wait to do it, and we’re trying to figure out how to do it. It’s a brand new world, but I’m so into it. I think everybody’s going to love it. It’s a very natural progression without giving anything away, but I’ve got more things for the Primal world and I cannot wait to do more.”
Primalseason 2 ended with the next generation of paleolithic warriors now grown and many of the old characters long dead. PerhapsPrimalseason 3 could see Spear and Mira’s young daughter fighting alongside Fang’s brood as they wander the earth together.

From Tartakovsky’s comments,it seems likePrimalseason 3 could have little to do with the previous two seasons, possibly makingPrimalan anthology. This could be an interesting direction to take. The previous seasons hinted at many different stories, worlds, and lives, all of which could be explored.

While some viewers may lament losing the classic Fang and Spear stories,Primalbegan as a pseudo-anthology, with each episode only loosely linked by the presence of Spear and Fear. It wasn’t until season 2 that a storyline truly began to emerge. Even that season had the most anthology-like episode, “The Primal Theory”.
