Lucy And Stephen “Can’t Shake Each Other” In Tell Me Lies Season 2
“Something just keeps magnetically bringing them into each other’s lives.”
Screen Rant: First of all, congratulations on season 2. It’s been quite a wait, so I’m sure you’re both excited that this is finally coming out.
Grace Van Patten: Yes. And we only finished filming it a couple of months ago, so it’s kind of crazy that it’s already about to be out in the world.

Jackson, we discovered the truth about Macy’s death in the season 1 finale. Did you always know that Stephen was driving the car, or were you in the dark until you got the finale script?
Jackson White: Oh my gosh, that’s such a good question. I don’t know. I can’t remember. Did I know?

Grace Van Patten: I feel like you knew because it was in the book that he was driving, and they were staying pretty true to that.
Jackson White: Yeah, I guess I did know. Yeah, I knew. It was all intentional.
Grace, on the other side of things, Lucy does not know the full extent of what happened, and her letter caused some trouble. Will we continue to see the repercussions of that in season 2?
Grace Van Patten: Yes, you will. Definitely the repercussions of the letter, but without giving too much away…I don’t know if I can say this without giving too much away. Yeah, there are definitely some consequences of the letter.
From what we’ve seen in the season 2 trailer, your characters have a very different dynamic now. How would you describe Stephen and Lucy’s relationship going forward?
Jackson White: Well, it’s a war. It’s a psychological war going on. These two people who are chemically tethered together for whatever reason, can’t shake each other. They’re both trying to act like they’re okay. Lucy probably more so. And something just keeps magnetically bringing them into each other’s lives. And the social aspect of that all is, the season is more about seeing how all these characters are operating. It’s totally become this full ensemble now, which is really exciting. You get to see everyone’s inner workings.
Tell Me Lies Season 2 Will Shed Light On How Lydia And Stephen Wind Up Together
“It makes a little more sense this season. I think you see how that could go that way.”
The way that Stephen broke up with Lucy last season was pretty rough. Can you give some insight into his thought process and why you feel he made the choice that he did?
Jackson White: I think he just clicks into autopilot like, “Nope, do what’s best.” He just goes into robot mode. He can probably turn his conscience off or mute it and turn it really low. And so he does things without caring what the consequence would be and how other people are feeling.
On that same note, do you think he’s actually struggling with guilt over what happened to Macy, or he’s just in full self-preservation mode?
Jackson White: I don’t know if he’s struggling with guilt. I think he has guilt. I think he has remorse, but I don’t know if Stephen feels guilt. I think he’s more of a justifier. He’s just like, “This is why this happened. This is why I had to do this. I had to survive.” He’s a survivor. Just keeps going.
We have to talk about that major twist at the end of the finale. Stephen is engaged to Lydia in the present day. Grace, are we going to see more of Lucy and Lydia’s friendship this season? We haven’t seen much of that character, which is what made it so shocking.
Grace Van Patten: Yeah. And you do see that they’re super close, which I think will make the audience wonder how that happened, how Stephen and her ended up being together. But it makes a little more sense this season. I think you see how that could go that way, which I think will scratch the itch of a lot of the audience wondering how that happened.
