TheHarry PotterTV show is one step closer, with the show using an open casting call to find the new Harry, Ron Weasley, and Hermione Granger. Based on the beloved books by author J.K. Rowling, the firstHarry Pottermovie was released in 2001, introducing Daniel Radcliffe as Harry, Rupert Grint as Ron, and Emma Watson as Hermione. After the movie saga ended in 2011, HBO is now developing aHarry PotterTV showwith showrunner Francesca Gardiner at the helm, with each season expected to tackle one book in the series.

The officialHarry PotterInstagram account now shares a new post, confirming that an open casting call is underway to find the new versions of Harry, Ron, and Hermione. The post, which includes a link to the casting agency’s application page for self-tapes, reveals thatthe show is looking for actors between nine and 11 years of age as of April 2025.

Those hoping to be considered must also be residents of the UK or Ireland, which is in keeping with the franchise’s British roots. The post includes a note that the show is open to “inclusive, diverse casting,” though such language is now fairly common on agency casting calls. Check out the post below:

What The Open Casting Call Means For The Harry Potter TV Show

How It’s Similar To The Casting Of Two Original Harry Potter Actors

Often with movies and TV shows, filmmakers will have ideas about what actors they want to cast ahead of time.An open casting call, however, means that a production is willing to consider all applicantsregardless of acting experience. This new casting call is similar to how two originalHarry Pottercastmembers were found, with both Grint and Watson having been cast as a result of such an approach. Watson, for example, had no experience as an actor when she was ultimately cast after a series of auditions and callbacks.

10 Minor Harry Potter Characters The TV Remake Can Finally Explore In More Depth

While awaiting the new HBO Harry Potter TV show, it’s worth considering which minor characters from the books and films need to be expanded upon.

The casting call also speaks to how faithful the TV show will be to Rowling’s source material, with Harry having been 11 years old in the first book. Accepting applicants down to nine also makes sense from a production standpoint, as the actors will likely age faster than their characters do. Finally, the April 2025 date in the casting call could suggest that this is when filming will be taking place, and this would be in keeping with the 2026 release window that was previously reported.

Our Take On The Harry Potter Casting Call

The New Harry, Ron & Hermione Face A Tough Challenge

Though Radcliffe may have been sought out by production and encouraged to audition, casting a wider net for other characters led to some perfect casting decisions for theHarry Pottermovies. It’s hard to imagine the movies, for example, without Grint, Watson, and Draco Malfoy actor Tom Felton, among others. Taking this same approach and casting based only on the substance of an audition, as opposed to basing a decision off of previous work, could ultimately be the best thing for the upcoming TV adaptation.

Even with strong casting, however,Radcliffe, Grint, and Watson have set the bar for success very high, and audiences who grew up with those films could struggle to accept new versions of these characters and stories. With thousands of children around the UK and Ireland sure to send in self-tapes, the audition process is evidently going to take some time, and it’s possible that an update regarding casting won’t arrive until next year. With this latest announcement, however, theHarry PotterTV show is now one step closer.
