Helen of Wyndhornisa love-letter to storytelling, specifically focusing on the fantasy and adventure genres. While the main story is Helen’s and takes place in the 1930s, each issue is book-ended by the modern day, with those impacted by her father’s writing. Through them, readers see how important a good story can be, even if it’s decades old. Along with that, the characters who are fascinated by C.K. Cole’s work are great stand-ins for comic readers, showing in glimpses why these books fascinate and comfort us.

Where these modern characters literally show the impact of a good story, Helen shows the same in a more fantastical way. Helen, who is at the lowest point in her life, has suddenly become the protagonist of what feels like one of her father’s stories. The adventures he once wrote about are real, and now she gets to experience them first hand. Even though they are dangerous, these adventures give Helen a new purpose, a means to connect to her grandfather and father, and a way to escape her troubles. For many readers, a good story can do the same for them, even if they are not literally going on an epic adventure.

Along with this theme,Helen of Wyndhornalso tackles grief and loss. Helen originally tries to lose herself in booze, and her grandfather stays closed off from others and focuses on his adventures. They both struggle to process their emotions until they eventually come together to go on these adventures, giving them something to bond over and distract themselves with. But in the end, a conversation proves to be the strongest thing connecting them - as well as the best way to cope.

Helen of Wyndhorn’sCreative Team Is a Fantasy Come to Life

These themes and the premise alone would make for an interesting comic, but then the creative powerhouse team of King and Evely takes this series to the next level. Both creators aretruly in their element withHelen of Wyndhorn. King, as seen in his work for DC Comics, loves a good framing device and stylized narration. These devices were solid inSupergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, but they’re even better inHelen of Wyndhorn, especially with the themes of storytelling. Meanwhile,Evely’s art inHelen of Wyndhorn, which is one of the biggest selling points ofSupergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, continues to astonish.

There is an ethereal, fluid quality to Evely’s artwork.Helen of Wyndhorn’sart is a mix of art nouveau and fantasy, and it is utterly gorgeous. The colors by Lopes make the story even more beautiful. As a fantasy series that is a love letter to the genre and stories at large,Helen of Wyndhornembraces the vibrancy and fun of this genre, even when things look dark. There is also a nostalgic quality to the colors, paying homage to the pulp stories it pulls inspiration from in a visual way.

Pacific Rim Meets Arrival in Dark Horse’s DAWN RUNNER (review)

Dark Horse’s new Dawnrunner, from the acclaimed creative team of Ram V and Evan Cagle, mixes high concept sci-fi such as Arrival and Pacific Rim.

Helen of Wyndhornis one of the best fantasy comics of 2024, as well as one ofDark Horse Comics' best comicsof that year. Seeing Evely and King reunite is a delight, especially for an independent series outside the superhero genre. While there are genre elements toSupergirl: Woman of Tomorrowoutside what’s expected of the superhero genre, it’s exciting to see them play with the fantasy adventure genre in such a refreshing manner.Helen of Wyndhornis a comic any avid reader - not justSupergirlfans - will want to have on their shelves, especially once that hard cover edition hits stores.
