Warning: There are spoilers ahead for the Silo season 2 finale.
Silo’s Martha Walker (Harriet Walter) fools Bernard Holland (Tim Robbins) in a clever way during season 2. Earlier in the season, Bernard blackmails Walker into being a spy for him on the Mechanical level. While Walker does not want to cooperate, she feels she has to, as it is seemingly the only way to save her ex-wife, Carla (Clarke Perkins). With a camera installed in Walker’s workshop and her instructed not to leave, Bernard is seemingly privy toMechanical’s plan inSiloseason 2.

After watching Walker talk with Knox (Shane McRae), Shirley (Remmie Milner), and otherSilocharacters, Bernard believes that Mechanical’s plan revolves around blowing up Silo 18’s generator. In response, Bernard orders nearly every raider to be sent to Mechanical to quell the rebellion and disarm the bomb. It is not untilSiloseason 2’s endingthatBernard realizes Walker has been playing him the entire timeand that this was never Mechanical’s real plan.
Walker Was Communicating With Mechanical Through Hand Signals In Silo Season 2
Bernard Was Following The Wrong Conversations The Entire Time
Walker was able to mislead Bernard because she and the denizens ofSilo’s Mechanical levelwere relying on hand signals for communication. Due to the loud noises from the generator, Mechanical workers had to yell to communicate. Over the years, the crews also developed hand signals that allowed them to communicate while working on the generators without having to yell over the loud noises. Walker taught the system of hand signals to the younger generation as well.
10 Best Characters In Silo, Ranked
From Juliette Nichols (Rebecca Ferguson) to Bernard Holland (Tim Robbins), who are the best characters in the Apple TV+ science-fiction series Silo?
The conversation that Bernard thought Walker was having with Knox and the others was not the conversation they were actually having. Their words were misdirection whilethe actual conversation was happening with the hand signals Walker, Knox, and everyone else in the workshop were using. This made it seem like Walker was still cooperating, and that Knox was revealing all the details of Mechanical’s plan. Bernard is usually many steps ahead of his enemies, but in this case, Mechanical was many steps ahead of him.

How Hand Signals Allowed Mechanical To Beat Bernard In Silo Season 2’s Finale
Bernard Fell For Walker’s Trap
With Bernard being unaware of the hand signals, he was fully convinced that Mechanical’s plan was to blow up the generator. Meanwhile, Mechanical’s real plan was to lure the raiders down below and to trap them there after detonating the actual bomb on the stairwell. Without the raiders, Bernard no longer has an army to enforce his commands, and Mechanical is able to assume control of the upper levels without any armed opposition.
Instead of being a traitor, the hand signals allow Walker to defeat Bernard and to be loyal to her community inSiloseason 2.

Mechanical is also aided by the deputieswho received the message fromSheriff Paul Billings(Chinaza Uche) and choose to support him and Mechanical instead of continuing to do Bernard’s bidding. Walker’s revelation about the hand signals becomes even more satisfying when she dumps a bag full of deputy badges at Bernard’s feet, making him realize that he no longer has any support and that he has lost. Instead of being a traitor, the hand signals allow Walker to defeat Bernard and to be loyal to her community inSiloseason 2.
