Summary

The Vampire Diariesis known for having some of thebest love triangles in TV shows, but there were plenty of couples on the series that didn’t get their due. I loved watchingElena, Damon, and Stefan as the central characters in the series for many years. Their romantic dynamic defined the plots and stories that the series focuses on. However, as the seasons progressed, I became even more interested in the supporting characters and seeing them get the storylines they deserved. This especially came through in their romantic relationships, which were always a defining aspect of the series.

Premiering on The CW in 2009,The Vampire Diariesbecame a smash hit for the network. It incurred two spinoff shows,The OriginalsandLegacies. Though neither of the spinoffs achieved the popularity of the first show, they cementedThe Vampire Diariesfranchise as a beloved and popular IP for the network. The supernatural elements and fights between good and evil were essential to the drama and conflicts. However,it was the love stories that kept me coming back for more.Seeing my favorite couples break up made me understandThe Vampire Diariesmoments that made viewers quit the show.

The Vampire Diaries Completely Wasted The Chemistry Between Caroline & Klaus

Their unexpected dynamic became one of the best parts of TVD.

I knew from the first moment that Candice King, Caroline, and Joseph Morgan, Klaus shared the screen that they were meant to be. Klaus' character introduction is teased throughout season 2 as an unstoppable force that will bring death and destruction to Mystic Falls. While this did come to pass, I couldn’t help falling in love with his character, and he soon developed into much more. ThoughKlaus' objective is to use Elena to break his curse, this brings him into proximity with Caroline, whom he is taken with. Despite seeing him as a villain, Caroline is drawn to him.

Klaus and Caroline’s dynamic grows, and the show references their chemistry many times before finally allowing them to form a budding relationship. However,The Vampire Diarieskept them apart for the entire time that Klaus was a recurring character on the show.Even though her attraction to him is obvious, and the characters use his affection for her to their advantage, Caroline refuses to admit that she has feelings for him. Additionally, the episodes that place Klaus and Caroline together are few and far between, as Klaus is always on a mission to gain more power.

The Vampire Diaries: 20 Best Klaus & Caroline Episodes

Out of all the ships that came out of The Vampire Diaries, Klaus and Caroline were the fans' favorite. Here are their best episodes

I’ll Never Forgive The CW Series For Not Following Through On This Relationship

After Klaus left the show, there was little chance they’d be together.

The Vampire Diariesspinoff series,The Originals, capitalized on the popularity of Klaus as a character, but it failed to complete the romantic arc between him and Caroline. While I enjoyed watching Klaus inThe Originalsas he got his own show dedicated to his character, I never believed his chemistry with anyone other than Caroline. Just as they were softening to each other and letting their vulnerable sides show, Klaus left Mystic Falls, and Caroline was left alone as Tyler also left the show. However, Tyler was never as compelling a love interest as Klaus.

Part of this might have been because Klaus' characterization as an antagonist disrupted Caroline’s arc as one of the show’s heroes.

There is one shining moment when Klaus comes back for an episode to close the loop on their relationship, but it doesn’t feel like a real confirmation of their connection. In season 5, episode 11, “500 Years of Solitude,” he returns to town, and Caroline admits her feelings, and they consummate their relationship. While this was the moment I was waiting for, it didn’t change the fact that the characters would never be together. Part of this might have been because Klaus' characterization as an antagonist disrupted Caroline’s arc as one of the show’s heroes.

However,The Vampire Diarieshad already set a precedent for this type of relationship to flourish.Damon and Elena’s relationship inThe Vampire Diariesis a great example of enemies-to-lovers done right. Damon begins the show as a villain, like Klaus, but Damon becomes a good man for Elena. I know Klaus had several thousand more years of bad deeds, buthe was beginning to prove to Caroline that he could change when he was torn away from the series.Even though the writers had other plans for them both, they could have been perfect together.

Why Caroline & Klaus Were An Obvious Match In The Vampire Diaries

Caroline and Klaus brought out the best in each other, balancing their quirks and struggles.

A large part of Caroline’s development as a character is learning to love and accept herself, as before she turned into a vampire, she had low self-esteem and self-worth. After she turned, Caroline became one of my favorite characters because she stopped defining herself by the men in her life and began focusing on herself. This is what makes Klaus' affection for her so important. He loves her for who she is and wants to watch her shineas an individual. It’s a refreshing change from Caroline’s past relationships with men who didn’t see how special she was.

When they meet again as more mature individuals inThe Originals, there’s a mutual respect and shared warmth that only an old married couple can achieve. This was a natural progression from their witty banter and the sharp barbs they threw at each other inThe Vampire Diaries. Outside of this easy chemistry and comfortability with each other, the characters made each other better.Klaus was inspired to look at the world with more empathy, thanks to Caroline, andCaroline realized she had bigger dreams because Klaus told her the world was waiting for her.
