Riley looking terrified in Dream Productions

Taking place in between the events of “Inside Out” and “Inside Out 2” is Pixar Animation Studios’ “Dream Productions,” an all-new series about the studio inside Riley’s mind where dreams really do come true—every night, on time and on budget. Riley is growing up and when her memories need some extra processing, Joy and the rest of the Core Emotions send them to Dream Productions.

Acclaimed director Paula Persimmon (voice of Paula Pell) faces a nightmare of her own: Trying to create the next hit dream after being paired up with Xeni (voice of Richard Ayoade), a smug daydream director looking to step up into the big leagues of night dreams.

What Dream Productions Trailer Reveals About The Show

Expect Some Familiar Faces

ThoughInside Out 2reviewsweren’t quite as glowing as those for the original movie, the film was still acclaimed and a box office smash hit, making it no surprise that the franchise is further expanding withDream Productions. The upcoming series is bringing back plenty of what made the original two movies work so well, including original characterslike Joy (Amy Poehler), Fear (Tony Hale), Sadness (Phyllis Smith), Disgust (Liza Lapira), and Anger (Lewis Black). Kensington Tallman also returns to voice Riley.

Why Inside Out Is The Most Important Animated Movie Franchise Of The Past 20 Years

Pixar’s Inside Out explores emotions and mental health in a relatable way, making it franchise that promotes empathy and self-understanding.

The trailer makes clear, however, thatDream Productionsis less aboutRiley’s various emotionsand more about Paula and Xeni’s attempts to bring a mammoth dream production to life on time and on budget. The Hollywood framing is a major part of the trailer, and the show will seemingly be leaning into this, with different directors for different “genres” of dreams, as well as a writers room where dreams begin life. It’s not explicitly revealed what dream Paula is working on, but the mention of a school dance could imply it’s related to Riley’s teen romantic life.

Our Take On The Dream Productions Trailer

The Disney+ Show Could Be A Worthy Franchise Expansion

Inside Out 3hasn’t yet been officially confirmed, butDream Productionsgoing over well with audiences and critics (and becoming a viewership hit) would certainly bode well for the further expansion of the franchise. From what’s revealed in the trailer, the spinoff show looks like an exciting combination of the old and the new, and the Hollywood framing of the making of dreams is an interesting idea.

Dream Productions’setting and premise means there are some opportunities for some exciting visuals, but,as with theInside Outfilms, it also could allow the show to tap into universal human experiences, this time regarding dreaming. The spinoff, then, could prove to be both thematically relevant and thoughtful, while also pushing boundaries in terms of the visual representations of Riley’s dreams and the comedy that comes with this.
