James Gunn has revealed the status of theJustice Leaguein the newDC Universe. The premiere DC superhero team appeared in just one of the DCEU’s movies, 2017’sJustice League. Director Zack Snyder later got to see his version of the film be released on Max in 2021 asZack Snyder’s Justice League. Among theDCU’s confirmed canon charactersare multiple heroes who would be great for the team, such asDavid Corenswet’s Superman. The Justice League has no announced movie for theDCU’s Chapter One, and Gunn might have teased why the team is taking time to appear.

Speaking withThe Hollywood Reporter,James Gunn said that the Justice League does not exist yet in the DCU. Gunn’s Justice League comments came after being asked about the canon status of his DCEU projects,The Suicide SquadandPeacemaker. Gunn confirmed that “they’re light canon,” with all ofPeacemaker, save for the DCEU’s Justice League appearing in the finale, being canon to the DCU. In November, Gunn similarly commented onPeacemaker’s canon status to the new DCU. Speaking withIGN, Gunn said thatPeacemakerseason 2 would “kind of deal with” the Justice League of it all. “Yeah, they’re light canon.Peacemakeris pretty straightforward, with the exception of the appearance by a certain group [the former DCEU’s Justice League] at the end. (Laughs.)They don’t existyet. But the rule is: If we mention [something from the past] in one of the new DCU shows [and movies], then it happened. So that’s the way we’re dealing with it.”

What James Gunn’s DCU Justice League Comments Mean

The DC Universe Offers Expansive World-Building

James Gunn has confirmed that the Justice League has yet to be created in the DCU. The reveal is interesting, as there were theories that a version of the team, the Justice League International, could play a role in Gunn’sSupermanmovie. It might turn out that heroes like the Green Lantern Guy Gardner, Hawkgirl, and Mr. Terrific are all part of a team, as thought, only it has no relation to the Justice League. What is known is that Gunn’s desire is to make the DCU feel lived-in from the start.

I’m Convinced I’ve Worked Out The Release Date For The Superman Movie Trailer

After a new update, the first trailer for James Gunn’s Superman movie could have an exciting date that would be fitting for the DCU’s debut film.

That is whymany of the DCU’s projects have multiple heroes or villains. Gunn’sSupermanis a known case of this, butCreature Commandosalso fits the bill, adding mostly new characters in its main roster and even including the Wonder Woman villain Circe. Batman’sThe Brave and the Boldmovie will include the Bat-Family, theLanternsseries stars Hal Jordan and John Stewart, and so it goes. With the confirmation that the Justice League is not yet a thing in the DCU, it seems like the high volume of characters in projects is building up to the team’s arrival.

Our Take On James Gunn’s DCU Justice League Comments

The DC Team Is On The Right Path

While I think it would have made sense for the Justice League to already exist in the DCU, since it is a lived-in world with years of history we never saw, I like that the team has yet to debut. This way, fans will get tofirst explore most of the DCU’s heroes in their own adventures, creating a connection with them before seeing the heroes come together and create the Justice League from scratch. The DCEU could have found more success if it had followed that approach, so I’m cool with James Gunn’sJustice Leagueplans.

Justice League

Cast

2017’s Justice League brings together iconic DC heroes under the direction of Zack Snyder. In the aftermath of Superman’s sacrifice, Bruce Wayne and Diana Prince recruit metahumans Barry Allen, Arthur Curry, and Victor Stone to combat the dire threat posed by Steppenwolf and his Parademons.
