One of the stars ofCovenanthas advocated for the plannedAlienmovie following Michael Fassbender’s character David. TheAlienfranchisekicked off with 1979’s Ridley Scott sci-fi horror classic. The director returned to the helm in 2012 with the prequelPrometheus, which introduced Michael Fassbender as the morally gray android David. Although David appeared in the 2017 sequelCovenantand there was a plan to bring him back for a third movie in a prequel trilogy, the newest movie, 2024’sRomulus,took place in a different time and featured an entirely different cast of characters.

During a recent interview withInversewhile promoting her new showThe Agency, Fassbender’sCovenantco-starKatherine Waterston argued that the third David movie still needs to be made. She asked for the powers that be to “keep David coming” because he’s an “amazing character.” She also speculated that her character Daniels “made it out of the pod” where she was trapped at the end ofCovenant, but even if she was not involved with the new movie, she’d “just love to go to the cinema and watch it.” Read her full quote below:

Keep David coming. [He’s] just this amazing character. I like to think that Daniels made it out of the pod, but I’m not sure. I just love that world. And Ridley is a dream. He’s an incredible person and a great collaborator. I’d personally love to work with him again, but even if I wasn’t involved, I’d just love to go to the cinema and watch it.

I really felt that with Covenant, that just with every passing year there seemed to be more people that are attached to it, and they come up to me to talk to me about it. And I, as a fan, feel the exact same way.

What This Means For The Alien Franchise

The David Trilogy Is Probably Not Coming Despite The Interest

While there may be a reappraisal going on forPrometheusandCovenant, it still does not seem likely that the any upcomingAlienmovieswill be the third installment in the David trilogy. While the first prequel was a solid success, the second movie (which added the iconic Xenomorph to the proceedings in a bid to answer complaints aboutPrometheuslacking a fully grown version)underperformed critically and commercially in a way that would likely discourage producersfrom pursuing another movie in that vein. AlthoughPrometheusremains the highest-grossing installment in the entire franchise, the franchise seems to have moved on in the past seven years, even thoughDavid’s fate afterAlien: Covenantremains unclear. In addition toRomulus, which takes place between the events of the original 1979 movie and its 1986 sequel, the franchise will be expanding with the upcoming FX seriesAlien: Earth, which is also a prequel but is not currently set to feature Fassbender reprising his role as David.

Our Take On Katherine Waterston’s Alien Comments

David’s Fate Could Still Be Addressed

Although Waterston’sAlienwishes may never be granted,Romulusdoes show that the franchise has not forgotten about the prequels. The movie is explicitly in continuity withPrometheusand uses several important plot elements introduced in that prequel to connect it directly to the events of the original quadrilogy. While this does not mean that the earlier continuity will ever be revisited, it could mean that the continued exploits of David will at least be mentioned in future installments in the franchise, especially considering the fact thatRomuluswas a hit, grossing $350.9 million against an $80 million budget.
