What The Underwater Stunt Teases Mean For The Mission: Impossible Franchise

How The Sequence Fits Into The Final Reckoning’s Story

The Final Reckoningwon’t be the first entry in the franchise to feature an underwater stunt.Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation(2015) also features an extended underwater sequencein which Hunt attempts to input crucial security details into a computer database. The sequence involves Cruise holding his breath for about six-and-a-half minutes, which was an actor record until Kate Winslet surpassed that while working onAvatar: The Way of Water(2022).

Tom Cruise continues to perform his own dangerous stunts for the Mission: Impossible movies, each death-defying sequence upstaging the last.

The trailer forThe Final Reckoninghas already revealed that the underwater sequences in the movie are connected to the Sevastopol submarine, which houses the key to destroyingThe Entity.Hunt will seemingly have to dive to the bottom of the Bering Sea to access the submarine, and the trailer hints that he eventually loses his suit and becomes unconscious. This sequence will seemingly be a major action set piece in the movie, and Cruise’s caption suggests that filming it involved applying what they had learned from makingRogue Nation.

Our Take On The Final Reckoning’s Underwater Sequence

How It Can Beat Rogue Nation’s

Though Cruise holding his breath for over six minutes while filmingRogue Nationis impressive, that sequence was arguably undercut by the fact that most of the environment he’s filming in is CGI. VFX and CGI will certainly play a role inThe Final Reckoningas well, just as they did in theacclaimedMission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning. Cruise, after all, isn’t actually filming his underwater scenes in frigid arctic waters, and VFX will have to be used to add in aspects of the environment. Still, the upcoming installment hopefully ends up feeling a little more real.

Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoningcurrently sports a 96% onRotten Tomatoes, the second-highest score of the franchise afterMission: Impossible – Fallout(98%).

WithMission: Impossible – The Final Reckoningalso set to feature car and foot chases and a stunning aerial sequence,it has the potential to be the best and most action-packed installment in the franchise yet. With the film’s release date approaching, the marketing is clearly ramping up, and audiences can expect more looks at Cruise’s death-defying stunts.
