Separate retcons toGodzilla: King of the Monstersgives the Monsterverse openings to introduce two different Titans. The KOTM Credits Seemed Vital To The Monsterverse’s Future
One of the articles in theKing of the Monsterscredits discussed Monarch’s involvement in the construction of a “mechanized giant” on Skull Island. The obvious implication of this hint was that it had to do with Mechagodzilla. This made a lot of sense, especially after it was revealed that Godzilla’s robotic counterpart would indeed be inGodzilla vs. Kong. But as it turns out,he was not designed by Monarch, nor was he built on Skull Island; he was created in an underground facility by APEX Cybernetics.
AnotherKing of the Monsterstease that didn’t play out the way many expected was Mothra’s return. According to a newspaper clipping in the credits,a Mothra-like egg was found in the Yunnan Rainforest in China by Monarch. Clearly, this Easter egg was offered to show that Mothra could be resurrected in the Monsterverse’s future via her egg. However, that was not the route it took to bring Mothra back. Instead,Godzilla x Kongusedthe Hollow Earth worldto bring her back into the picture.

It May Be That The Egg Was Never Mothra’s
The decision not to useKing of the Monsters’Mothra Easter egg to revive the Titan draws attention back to an alternate theory that arose from the credits. It was once speculated that since the movie never outright confirmed that the egg belonged to Monthra, thatit could actually belong to Battra, her rival in Toho’s movies. InGodzilla vs. Mothra, Battra and Mothra were basically “good” and “evil” counterparts to each other, with Mothra being a defender of humanity and Battra feeling that human civilization was a danger to the planet.
With Mothra alive and well in the Monsterverse again, the egg mentioned inKing of the Monstersserves no purpose at all- unless it belongs to another monster - namely Battra. As a creature that’s closely related to Bothra, it would certainly be logical for the egg to be mistaken as Mothra’s offspring, only for Monarch to realize later that it’s a different Titan altogether. Being disturbed or forcibly hatched from his egg in a future Monsterverse installment could reinforce Battra’s beliefs that humanity is a scourge on the planet.
The Monsterverse Still Needs To Reveal Monarch’s “Mechanized Giant”
The Monsterverse Can Still Make Sense Of Its Mecha-Titan Setup
As forKing of the Monsters’suggestion that Mechagodzilla was going to be built by Monarch, this too can be properly explained if it’s addressed at length in another Monsterverse project. It’s theoretically possible that whileAPEX was working on Mechagodzilla, Monarch was designing its own mecha-Titan on Skull Island. If that’s true,the Monsterverse could introduce a different robotic kaiju from Toho’s movies.In total, the Godzilla franchise boasts three others it could pick from: Moguera, Mechani-Kong, and Jet Jaguar.
Mechani-Kong never appeared in aGodzillamovie, but is connected to the franchise regardless due to his appearance inKing Kong Escapes, a movie that featured the same version of King Kong that fought Godzilla inKing Kong vs. Godzilla.
Mechani-Kong may be the silliest of all the available options, but his connection to Kong could help explain why the construction process happened on Skull Island. It could be that Monarch used its studies of Kong to further its work on the project. Alternately, the focus of the operation may have been to build Moguera or Jet Jaguar, one-time allies of Godzilla who fought alongside him inGodzilla vs. SpaceGodzillaandGodzilla vs. Megalonrespectively.
Thanks toMonarch: Legacy of the Monsters, the Monsterverse is already in a position to answer the “mechanized giant” mystery. Season 1 ended with several main characters on Skull Island in 2017, which is two years beforeGodzilla: King of the Monsters. Apparently, APEX has a facility there, which appears to have been a result of an alliance with Monarch. Their arrangement could be used to reveal the “mechanized giant,” which could have been made as a joint Monarch-APEX operation.
