Justin Bartha returns as Riley Poole in the concept trailer, and Jessica Chastain steps into the role of the villain.

Over the past few years, various updates have arrived regardingNational Treasure 3, with Cage himself tellingScreen Rantearlier this year that “There is no National Treasure 3,” before suggesting that Disney is responsible for the third film not coming to fruition. Updates from Turteltaub, producer Jerry Bruckheimer, and screenwriter Ted Elliot, however, have been much more promising. Comments from all three figures have suggested that enthusiasm remains high regarding a third outing.
Regarding the possibility ofNational Treasure 3,Turteltaub recently confirmedthat the plan is to “100%” bring backNational Treasurecastmembers Cage, Bartha, and Diane Kruger. Elliot, who is working on the script for the third film, also recently commented on its status in an interview with theNational Treasure Huntpodcast, revealing thathe has finished a first draft. As for story teases, Elliot hints that the third film would dive deeper into the Ben and Riley dynamic, and that he’s “trying to do something different with the FBI” this time around.

National Treasure 3 may be stuck in development hell, but there are quite a few stories that could be on page 47 of the President’s Book of Secrets.

The main hurdle currently is crafting a script that gets everyone, including Cage, excited enough to think it’s worth doing 17 years after the previous installment.
