When closely examining his behavior during the series, it appears that the son of the story’s main villain might have the ability to break the fourth wall. On two separate occasions, Damian has been seen interacting with elements of the manga that he should not be able to see.

In one ofSpy x Family’sbest moments, taking place in chapter 9 of the manga,Anya attempts to apologize to Damianfor having hit him the day before. While Anya tried to ask for forgiveness, Damian’s lackeys began mocking her, causing Loid’s daughter to begin crying in front of them. The youngest Desmond, taken aback by her sudden change in behavior, begins to notice her for the first time, causing a text bubble to appear by his side.
Damian, unwilling to admit that he is beginning to feel something for Anya,slaps the text bubble, despite it not being a physical item in his world. A similar event occurs in chapter 76, in which Donovan’s youngest son is caught by Becky as he looks straight at Anya as she talks with her classmates.The hilarious Blackbell heirteases him by implying that he is jealous. Damian’s heart immediately begins to beat faster again, causing a text bubble that implies he is shivering to appear, which he slaps.
In both instances,Damian is not only able to see the tools a manga writer would use to adorn a scene, but he is also able to touch them. He should not have been aware of the existence of these bubbles. The fact that this event takes place two times in the manga may imply thatthis is not a simple gag used by Endoto make his readers laugh. Damian could have the ability to see emotions, explaining why this only occurs when he has a strong emotional response, or he can break the fourth wall.

One of the many biggest mysteries of theSpy x Familyfranchise isthe truth behind Project Apple, an experiment to give mammals special abilities. This cruel trial is what gave Bond the ability to see the future, and it is heavily implied that Anya’s mind-reading abilities are a result of this operation as well. While still not confirmed, the series has often hinted at Donovan having been a key part of Project Apple.
It is likely that he, in his pursuit of power,used his family members as test subjects in his experiments.
This may be the reason why Damian can interact with objects that should be invisible to him, like text bubbles. Since the items he has slapped in the past are all tied to his emotions, he could have been a part of an experiment that tried to give humans the ability to perceive other’s emotions. Damian might be able to know what the people around him are feeling, just like Anya can read the minds of others.
Damian’s ability to interact with elements of the manga is likely to be brought up again in future chapters of theSpy x Familymanga. Whether this is the result of an experiment commanded by his father or simply a joke included by Endo, is yet to be seen. Nonetheless, the fact thatDamian Desmondcan break the fourth wall will remain one of the manga’s most unique and intriguing details.
