Among the many upcoming horror movies based on children’s stories isPeter Pan’s Neverland Nightmare, and the first trailer took me by surprise as it looks a lot better and darker than I expected. The horror genre has regained its popularity in recent years thanks to many successful movies – from original movies to adaptations to reboots and legacy sequels. However, one unexpected trend that gained a lot of force is horror versions of children’s stories and characters, which began with 2023’sWinnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey.

Its success led to the creation of a shared universe called The Twisted Childhood Universe, and it already has various movies in development. Among them isPeter Pan’s Neverland Nightmare, written and directed by Scott Jeffrey. The project was announced in 2022 as part ofBlood and Honey’s shared universe and this version of Peter Pan is expected to join other characters from this universe in the crossover moviePoohniverse: Monsters Assemble. GivenBlood and Honey,I was expectingPeter Pan’s Neverland Nightmareto be a nonsensical horror movie, but the first trailer truly took me by surprise.

Peter Pan’s Neverland Nightmare Can Beat Winnie-The-Pooh: Blood & Honey

A Peter Pan horror movie is on the horizon, and the box office success of Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey can seriously help the upcoming film.

Peter Pan’s Neverland Nightmare Gives An Unexpected Twist To The Character

Peter Pan’s Horror Movie Isn’t What Many Expected

I was expectingPeter Pan’s Neverland Nightmareto be an adult Peter Pan who kills people and flies around at night looking for victims to take to Neverland.

After whatBlood and Honeydid with Winnie-the-Pooh and his friends, I was expectingPeter Pan’s Neverland Nightmareto be an adult Peter Pan who kills people and flies around at night looking for victims to take to Neverland and kill them there. Now that thefirst trailer forPeter Pan’s Neverland Nightmarehas been released, I’m relieved to say I was wrong about what the movie would be like. I was even expecting it to takeone of the most popular dark Peter Pan theories and bring it to life, but it’s completely different.

Peter Pan Peering Through a Trapdoor in Peter Pan’s Neverland Nightmare

According to the first trailer ofPeter Pan’s Neverland Nightmare,Peter (Martin Portlock) is a serial killer who kidnaps children to take them to Neverland, where they would be safe. Neverland is most likely some twisted imaginary place in Peter’s mind, but Peter is so determined to fulfill his goal that he’s even shown kidnapping a school bus. Accompanying Peter is Tinkerbell (briefly seen in the trailer at around the 00:32 mark), who takes heroine convinced that it’s pixie dust.

I was definitely not expecting Peter Pan to be a serial killer who kidnaps children and is pretty brutal in his kills.

Captain Hook can also be seen in the trailer at around the 1:42 mark, and he looks like a victim of Peter instead of an antagonist. I was definitely not expecting Peter Pan to be a serial killer who kidnaps children and is pretty brutal in his kills (though whether he kills the kids or not is to be seen), but this idea and the overall tone and look of the trailer have convinced me to give this movie a chance.

Peter Pan’s Neverland Nightmare Is Taking Inspiration From Successful Horror Movies

There Are Some Evident Horror Influences In Peter Pan’s Neverland Nightmare

The trailer shows some of these right away, as the very first scene is reminiscent of Georgie’s death inIt.

Peter Pan’s Neverland Nightmaretakes inspiration from J. M. Barrie’s classic character, but it also has some clear horror influences. The trailer shows some of these right away, as the very first scene is reminiscent of Georgie’s death inIt. Peter gives off Pennywise vibes in that scene, and he even wears face paint, so it’s inevitable to compare him with Pennywise and the movie’s story with that of Stephen King’sIt. Following this line,Peter Pan’s Neverland Nightmarealso made me think ofThe Black Phone, when Peter wears masks to kidnap children.

The Black Phoneis based on the short story of the same name by Joe Hill, Stephen King’s son.

It was going to be inevitable forPeter Pan’s Neverland Nightmareto have some heavy horror influences, especially from the slasher genre, but I wasn’t expecting it to have clear inspirations from stories likeIt. The first trailer forPeter Pan’s Neverland Nightmarehas given me hope for the movie being better thanBlood and Honey, and that maybe the Twisted Childhood Universe won’t be that bad.
