PlayStation 5owners can get in on the celebration of Sony’s 30th Anniversary of PlayStation with some free nostalgic themes to enjoy on their systems. The party comes to the players with retro-inspired sounds, themed graphical designs, and startup options that hearken back to consoles from the last three decades. All themes are entirely free, but sadly, are only available for a limited time while the event is in progress. Even if someone hasn’t been a longtime player, these new looks can be a fun change of pace.
July 28, 2025, marks the 30th anniversary of PlayStation, and the company has been celebrating with aspecial release 30th Anniversary Edition PS5, sales on several games, and now some nostalgia-inspired themes for the PS5 which are free for players.
As shared byShinobi602on X (formerly known as Twitter), the themes show up as unique designs on the top bar of the PS5 game menu and include the original bootup audio sounds from the PS1, PS2, PS3, and PS4 consoles.

To get these new themes,a PS5 owner needs to download the update and reboot their system, as will be directed by the system on their screen. Upon starting up, a series of three announcement slides will appear explaining that it is in celebration of the 30th anniversary and what is available. The final slide includes a button for people to immediately go to theSettings menuwhere the appearance can be changed.

Of course, with this anniversary sale happening at the same time as Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals, it has been a bit overshadowed by other companies also having similar sales without an anniversary to celebrate. Thankfully, thePlayStation Store anniversary sale will continue until December 20, long past Cyber Monday sales.
As PlayStation fans look back at some of their favorite gaming moments of the past 30 years, and reminisce with the nostalgic sounds and appearances of these inspired themes, it is hard not to wish that the PS5 would incorporate more themes into their system. Past consoles in Sony’s lineup have given players numerous theme options to customize their systems, and these anniversary themes are a bit of a reminder of that.
