Summary
Ryan Murphy is leavingAmerican Horror Storyaside for a moment and bringing another horror TV series withGrotesquerie, and I’m here for it and how it’s following a current and popular horror trend. While fans ofAmerican Horror Storywait for its 13th season, Ryan Murphy is keeping himself busy with other TV projects. Among them isGrotesquerie, a horror TV series starring some of Murphy’s frequent collaborators and some new (and surprising) faces in the Murphyverse, and which is already drawing comparisons toAmerican Horror Storyin terms of its tone and approach to horror.
Grotesqueriefollows Lois Tryon (Nash-Betts), a detective investigating a series of heinous crimes in a small community. When the case turns out to be a lot more complex than she anticipated,Detective Tryon enlists the help of nun and Catholic Guardian journalist Sister Megan(Micaela Diamond). In addition to this case, Detective Tryon is going through some issues with her family, while Sister Megan has her own demons due to a difficult past. The first teaser forGrotesqueriehas sparked comparisons toAmerican Horror Story, but it also shows it’s following a current horror trend that makes me more excited about this project.

Whoa, I Did Not Expect Travis Kelce’s First TV Show To Be So Dark
Ryan Murphy’s horror TV series Grotesquerie is Travis Kelce’s first major acting role, but I wasn’t expecting it to be so dark and intense.
Ryan Murphy’s Grotesquerie Is Following The Religious Horror Trend
Some Successful Movies Have Followed The Religious Horror Trend
It’s not just that one of the main characters is a nun, but, from what’s shown in the first teaser, the crimes have religious and Satanic connections.
Ryan Murphy is no stranger to the horror genre, and he knows well how to appeal to the audience through popular topics, disturbing stories, and horror trends.Grotesquerieisn’t the exception, and instead of covering popular fears or topics asAmerican Horror Storydoes, it’s leaning into the current and popular trend of religious horror. It’s not just that one of the main characters is a nun, but, from what’s shown in the first teaser, the crimes have religious and Satanic connections, and there’s a lot of religious imagery throughout the teaser.

The horror genre has seen two big hits in the religious horror branch in less than a year:ImmaculateandThe First Omen.
Religious horror isn’t new in the genre (no one will ever forgetThe ExorcistandThe Omen), but it has gone through a resurgence recently. The horror genre has seen two big hits in the religious horror branch in less than a year:ImmaculateandThe First Omen. Directed by Michael Mohan,Immaculatefollows Sister Cecilia(Sydney Sweeney), a young novice invited to an Italian convent whereshe finds herself in the middle of a nightmare as she’s suddenly pregnant, and she’s surrounded by unspeakable horrors.
The First Omenis a prequel to 1976’sThe Omen, and it follows Margaret (Nell Tiger Free), a young woman preparing to take her vows at an Italian convent. However,Margaret ends up uncovering a disturbing conspiracy to bring about the birth of the Antichrist, as she’s key to their horrible plans.Grotesqueriefollows this same line with its religious storyline as part of its horror and crime plot, which makes it more exciting and even more likely to succeed.
How Grotesquerie Can Stand Out From Recent Religious Horror Stories
Grotesquerie Is Doing One Thing Differently
Grotesquerieis a horror and crime story, instead of being fully focused on religion and supernatural elements related to it.
What I find even more exciting aboutGrotesqueriefollowing the religious horror trend is how it can stand out from the rest, especiallyImmaculateandThe First Omen(as they’re the most recent ones).Grotesquerieis a horror and crime story, instead of being fully focused on religion and supernatural elements related to it, likeImmaculateandThe First Omenwith their Antichrist storylines.Sister Megan is also not the center of the story inGrotesquerie, and she’s a complement to Detective Tryon and her investigation.
Of course, it’s possible that theGrotesquerieteaser is selling an idea that’s completely different from the final product, which wouldn’t be a new move from Murphy as he does that withevery season ofAmerican Horror Story. However,Grotesqueriecan benefit a lot more from Sister Megan not being the main focus and not getting her involved in some religious, supernatural chaos like recent religious horror stories did, and that makes it a lot more exciting asit’s unlike what the audience would expect from this branch of horror.
