Warning: Minor spoilers ahead forShrinkingseason 2, episode 8, “Last Drink.“Shrinkingseason 2, episode 8, “Last Drink,” introduces a new character, and she’s played by someone who very recently starred in another unconventional Apple TV+ comedy show. Not only that, but both projects also shared the same showrunner, strengthening the connection even further. As such, the new addition to theShrinkingcastserves as a sign to watch another show on the same streaming platform that has only recently debuted. The fact thatShrinkingseason 3 has already been confirmedsupports the stance that the show has quickly become one of thebest shows on Apple TV+.
With a star-studded cast of huge names like Harrison Ford and Jason Segal,Shrinkinghas quickly gained a devoted following. Not only just does the show add to Apple TV+’s impressive comedy library, but also to the portfolio of the showrunner. Since also creatingScrubs, Bill Lawrence has gone on to work onTed Lasso,Shrinking, and a variety of other projects. One of his most recent creations was the first time he castShrinking’s new actress.
Shrinking’s Sarah is Hagner’s second role in a row in a show to be made Apple TV+and to have Lawrence as the showrunner. Immediately before being cast alongside Brett Goldstein inShrinkingseason 2, Hagner played Eve Stripling in theBad Monkeycast. However, a shared actress is where the comparisons between the two characters end.Eve turns out to be one ofBad Monkey’s best villains, and her motivations stem from an immense level of shallowness. Her onscreen relationship with Rob Delaney’s Nick Stripling is greed masquerading as love, making Eve incredibly unlikable in all the best ways.
While many actors can quickly become typecast in certain genres, Hagner appears to be bucking that trend.
Bad Monkeyseason 1 is based on a 2013 Carl Hiaasen novelof the same name. AlthoughBad Monkeyseason 2 hasn’t yet been announced, Lawrence has been very vocal about moving on to adapt the book’s only sequel,Razor Girl, to continue the story of Vince Vaughn’s Andrew Yancy.Hagner has a much different role to play inBad Monkeythan she does inShrinking, making her latest casting very interesting. While many actors can quickly become typecast in certain genres, Hagner appears to be bucking that trend.
Apple TV+ has made sure there is enough of a shared audience
Despite being very different in terms of tone and overarching themes.Bad MonkeyandShrinkingare both excellent shows. They each derive their humor from vastly different scenarios. WhereasBad Monkeyis essentially a murder mystery tale with dark jokes thrown into the mix,Shrinkingmanages to find a way to make a grieving group of friends and family genuinely amusing in the most heartwarming way imaginable. On paper, they may sound like they’re aimed at very different audiences, butShrinkingandBad Monkeyreally are cut from the same cloth.
