Star Trek: Voyageractor Garrett Wang addresses whether he’ll ever return to theTrekuniverse after his recent cameo onLower Decks. Season 5, episode 9 of Paramount+’s animatedTrekseries saw the return, in non-live-action form, of several characters familiar to hardcore fans.Deep Space Nine’s Elim Garak and Julian Bashir made an appearance, as didEnterprise’s T’Pol and, somewhat randomly,Star Trek: First Contact’s Lily Sloane. But perhaps the most memorableLower Deckscameo came fromVoyager’s Harry Kim, who appeared as multiple variants in the wacky multiversal episode.
Kim’sLower Decksreturn could indeed mark the last time the character ever appears inTrek, as actor Wang is well-aware, though he says he hopes Kim isn’t gone forever. Appearing onAll Access Star Trek, Wang discussed his feelings about potentially leaving Harry Kim behind, while relating his big crossover idea involving aDSNcharacter, and the ever-mysterious Section 31 – an idea Wang says was already partially adopted by a piece ofTrekmedia:

If it is my last Star Trek, I’ll be very sad. I would love to be able to reappear in something else. At one time I was espousing the idea that there should be a show with Harry Kim and Jake Sisko, basically as Section 31 partners. And they actually threw that to the comics. In the Trek comic book world, Harry Kim is a Section 31 agent. I’m like, ‘What the heck?’ It was my idea, you put it in the comic, you didn’t put it in live action, that’s fine.
What This Means For Star Trek And Harry Kim
Is Section 31 Harry’s Way Back In?
Harry Kim has indeed joinedSection 31, as outlined in IDW’sStar Trekcomic book issue #17. It’s a strange turn for theVoyagercharacter, given the dark and mysterious nature of Starfleet’s secret division. But it’s an idea Wang himself claims he originally came up with, so he’s obviously on-board with this latest development in Kim’s career.
There’s already a multiversal element toSection 31, of course, after the Guardian of Forever’s appearance onStar Trek: Discovery.

Wang’s remarks indeed make it seem that he’d be ready to go in any futureTrekuniverse project. There are seemingly no hard feelings on Wang’s side after theTrekcomic apparently pinched his idea for Harry Kim to join Section 31. Wang would have been aware of the upcoming Section 31 movie, of course, so perhaps his claim of ownership over the idea of Kim joining the shadowy organization is, in fact, a not-so-subtle message for Alex Kurtzman and the rest ofTrek’s current overseers.

Anything Is Possible With Multiversal Storytelling
There is a big piece ofSection 31content coming soon to Paramount+, in the form of a streaming movie. Wang’s participation in the film has not been announced, and given where the story sits in theTrektimeline– somewhere afterDiscoveryseason 1 – it would be odd if Kim popped in. Then again, given the number of different realities Kim has been zapped to over the years, perhaps the character could plausibly make a cameo appearance inSection 31(though this would still seem quite random, especially to those who don’t read the comics).
Star Trek: Section 31releases on Paramount+ on June 05, 2025.
There’s already a multiversal element toSection 31, of course, after the Guardian of Forever’s appearance onStar Trek: Discovery. Just as the Kelvin timeline move freed things up for J.J. Abrams’Trekmovies, so could the Guardian’s manipulations make life easier for Kurtzman and company when they seek to mess with canon by bringing back characters, or having characters appear outside their own times. Ultimately,Star Trek: Voyagerstar Wang could get his wish to play Harry Kim again, thanks to the all-powerful (and convenient) Guardian.
