Summary

In manyStar Warsmovies and TV shows, the master-apprentice relationships of the Jedi has been a core theme, andThe Mandalorian & Groguwill be no different - but this time, it will focus on a group other than the Jedi. The originalStar Wars(since retitledA New Hope)set a precedent for the master-apprentice theme inStar Wars, withObi-Wan Kenobiacting asLuke Skywalker’s first Jedi mentor before Yoda would become Luke’s true master inThe Empire Strikes Back. Ever since, these relationships between Jedi Masters and Padawans have become central to theStar Warsstory.

Up until this point inStar Wars, this has been seen almost exclusively through the Jedi, with the Sith serving as the primary exception. Though there have been stories within other groups that involve this master-apprentice theme, none have taken on as big of a role inStar Warsas the Jedi. Master-Padawan duos such as Obi-Wan and Anakin Skywalker, Luke and Yoda,Anakin and Ahsoka, and, recently, Ahsoka and Sabine Wren have helped to drive their respective narratives. Now,The Mandalorian & Groguwill continue this tradition, but will subvert it in some exciting ways.

The Mandalorian & Grogu Continues The Master-Apprentice Trend

But With Mandalorians, Not Jedi (Or Sith)

The Mandalorianseason 3’s endingset upDin DjarinandGroguas a Mandalorian master and apprentice duo, with Din serving as Grogu’s Mandalorian mentor and Grogu officially being deemed as a Mandalorian apprentice by theArmorer. Now, newfootage fromThe Mandalorian & Grogumoviehas confirmed thatthis will be a core aspect ofStar Wars’next film, with the opening montage emphasizing Din’s words about his apprenticein season 3 before showing the two working in tandem on a risky mission. This sets their master-apprentice and, uniquely, father-son dynamic at the movie’s forefront.

Refreshingly, this will be the first non-Jedi or Sith master and apprentice duo to continue this theme in a majorStar Warsproject. It seems fitting, given how many otherStar WarsnormsThe MandalorianTV show has broken over the last five years. That core aspect of theStar Warsstory will still be present, but rather than focusing on powerful Force-wielders once again, this story will be more grounded. This, however, isn’t the only changeThe Mandalorian & Groguwill be making to the Jedi’s long-runningStar Warstrend.

The Jedi Made A Mistake By Training Their Apprentices As Soldiers

This Was a Poor Decision Made During the Clone Wars

Arguably the biggestStar Warsera for master-apprentice relationships is the prequel era, when the Jedi Order was about to fall and the Clone Wars were raging throughout the galaxy. During this time, the Jedi trained their Padawans on the battlefield, as seen with Anakin and Ahsoka. While it seemed as if these Jedi Padawans didn’t mind and, in fact, craved the action and the heat of battle, it still becomes evident that this had a profound impact on those young Jedi - particularly in the case of Ahsoka.

TheAhsokaseries is what really dives deep into the long-term psychological impact this decision by the Jedi had on these Padawans. Many years after the Clone Wars ended, Ahsoka is an adult who still struggles to come to terms with what she had to do as a Padawan. She developed a fear towards herself that’s still present, becauseshe considers herself defined by the clones who died under her command, and the other lives impacted by her choices on the battlefield. While this was a mistake for the Jedi, it will be subverted inThe Mandalorian & Grogu.

Din Djarin Training Grogu As A Warrior Makes Sense For Mandalorians

Mandalorians Are Meant to Be Fierce Warriors

In contrast to the Jedi, who are meant to be keepers of the peace, Mandalorians have always been known as warriors. Their people are renowned for their fighting abilities, which has given them a reputation as the greatest warriors in the galaxy. This means that Din Djarin training Grogu as a warrior by taking him on dangerous missions actually makes sense. While the Jedi negatively affected their Padawans by forcing them to become soldiers,Din will be actively protecting and leading Grogu to partake in their people’s warrior culture.

This offers a fresh perspective on the master-apprentice theme as a whole. While the familiarity of it will still be present, it will also be seen through the lens of another cultural group, enriching the audience’s understanding of others in the very same galaxy. Given how much emphasis Mandalorians place on their heritage and their traditions,The Mandalorian & Groguexploring a master-apprentice relationship with Din Djarin and Grogu in this way will be both special and informative.
