Summary
It has been 27 years sinceStarship Trooperswas first released, but the original cast has reunited under the shadow of a familiar foe. Based on the 1959 sci-fi novel of the same name, 1997’sStarship Trooperslargely failed to resonate with critics at the time of its original release, with many misinterpreting the movie’s anti-fascist satire. However, in the years that followed, it would not only come to develop a cult following, but would also spawn two low-budget sequels, animated movies and television series, and multiple video game tie-ins.
Ahead of the October 11 release date for the franchise’s latest video game,Starship Troopers: Extermination, original movie starCasper Van Dienshared a photo to X, formerly Twitter, in which hereunites with his co-stars Dina Meyer, Denise Richards and Michael Ironside. Check it out below:

Standing before a life-size replica Arachnid, both Dien and Meyer are also shown wielding the fictional Morita rifles once wielded by their characters Johnny Rico and Dizzy Flores.
What’s Happening With The Starship Troopers Reboot?
It Has Been Years Since Plans For A Franchise Reboot Were First Announced
Despite its lackluster box office haul and largely negative critical reception,Starship Troopershas managed to sustain a large enough cult following to justify the continued expansion of the world established inPaul Verhoeven’s original movie. Moreover, plans to reboot the property were also announced as far back as 2011,when producer Neal Moritz first tapped screenwriters Ashley Edward Miller and Zack Stentz (Thor, X-Men: First Class)to pen a fresh take on Edward Neumeier’s original novel.
Whether audiences will ever get a chance to return to humanity’s war against the Arachnids remains to be seen, but given the original movie’s continuing cult-like appeal, the project may eventually find fresh life once more.

Since then, however, plans for the reboot would oscillate between a movie or potential television series, and even switch hands, with Columbia Pictures later selecting theBaywatchreboot scribes Mark Swift and Damian Shannon to pen the script in 2016. Sadly, despite this earlier momentum, no real news concerning plans for theStarship Troopersreboothave emerged since. Nonetheless,Van Dien’s devotion to the property has remained steadfast, even pitching his own idea for an “Old Man Rico” series involvingAlita: Battle Angeldirector Robert Rodriguez.
Starship Troopers Shower Scene Is Its Most Subversive Moment
The Starship Troopers shower scene might be infamous for the nudity involved, but viewers can miss the subversive intent of the scene.
With so many other cult favorites currently being given the reboot or revival treatment, theStarship Troopersreboot seems long overdue. Whether audiences will ever get a chance to return to humanity’s war against the Arachnids remains to be seen, but given the original movie’s continuing cult-like appeal, the project may eventually find fresh life once more. Moreover,Van Dienhas repeatedly expressed his ongoing fondness for the property, and his continued involvement would likely be a boon for any such plans.
