The Owl Houseran for three seasons on Disney Channel, during which time the relationship between human teenager Luz Noceda (Sarah-Nicole Robles) and child-like demon King (Alex Hirsch) was always central. However, how a certain piece of Boiling Isles lore connects to their dynamic is never explicitly clarified in the show. The Owl Housefollows Luz as she stumbles into a magical otherworld and settles into the Owl House, where she trains as a witch under the tutelage of chaotic witch Eda Clawthorne (Wendie Malick).

When they all meet, Eda already has King, a somewhat mysterious creature who believes he was once the king of all demons, in her care. However,King is objectively still a kid, and he and Luz develop a best friend/sibling relationship, while Eda comes to view them as her surrogate kids (more formally recognized, in King’s case). However, while Luz was largely a fully-fledged witch and King was revealed to be a young Titan by the timeThe Owl Housewas canceled after season 3, the show still missed out on a piece of world-building that is widely assumed.

Luz Figured Out Glyphs So Fast Because King Was Helping Her

Belos Is Amazed That Luz Mastered Magic Much Faster Than Him — But King Inadvertently Helped Her

A plot point that is strongly hinted at in some ofThe Owl House’s best episodes is thatKing being by Luz’s side all along and wanting her to excel at magic actually enables her success as a witch.Without the anatomical source of magic that most witches have, Luz is dependent on drawn “glyphs” she discovers in the environment of the Boiling Isles to perform spells. The world-building eventually leads to the conclusion that the glyphs are relics of an older form of magic that comes directly from the deity known as the Titan.

Luz had a small Titan by her side rooting for her all along.

The villain Philip Wittebane/Emperor Belos (Matthew Rhys) is impressed that Luz discovered and mastered glyphs and their combinations so quickly — much faster than him. He remarks it is “almost as if the world wanted to hide them from [him],” and later, “almost like the Titan himself didn’t want me to have that knowledge.” What he doesn’t know is that King himself is a Titan, therefore Luz had a small Titan by her side rooting for her all along, who intrinsically wanted her to succeed at magic because it is important to her, and he cares about her, likely speeding up her education.

Additionally, Luz eventually meets the Titan, King’s dad (Arin Hanson), who sacrifices himself in the final episode to save Luz for King. When he is gone, the source of Luz’s magic is gone, and she can no longer use the glyphs. However, as King grows up and becomes a stronger source of magic himself, she can use them again. However, this is more directly stated in the final episode, whereasKing’s covert but crucial role throughout the series is only easily inferable.

The Owl House All But Confirms That King Helped Luz With Magic

King Helped Luz Succeed Simply By Wanting Her To Succeed

Luz discovering glyphs mostly happens on accident: she sees a glyph on a snowflake or in a spell Eda performs and figures out glyph combinations through trial and error. There is a lot of luck involved, andBelos' complaints about the Titan seemingly working against him suggest that the universe itself gave Luz much better luck than Belos, allowing her to master magic much quicker. Never in the show does anyone actually say King’s support is the source of her luck, but in retrospect, the evidence is amazingly obvious.

For instance, in season 1, episode 4, “The Intruder,” King is trying to give Luz a lesson on demons, but she only wants to learn magic. They are then launched into the horror movie situation of having to deal with a cursed monster Eda loose in the house. After having a heartfelt conversation, King suggests they look at the video of Eda performing a light spell again. Once King has decided to be genuinely supportive and actually wants Luz to be able to do the spell, she suddenly sees the glyph in the video.

Luz Is A Chosen One In The Owl House, But Only Because She Is A Good Sister To King

The Owl House Deconstructs The Chosen One Trope, But Secretly Takes It To The Next Level

The fact that Luz just sees glyphs in the world around her is likely spurred on by King simply wanting her to find glyphsbecause it makes her happy. The way Belos and the othersupporting characters ofThe Owl Housetalk about the Titan describes a paradigm of a belief in divine endorsement. The Titan characters don’t have absolute control over the outcome of events, but they seem to have some sway over their brand of magic. Luz becomes a very successful and powerful witch, which Belos views as having been blessed by the Boiling Isles or the Titan.

However, without even knowing, Luz was supported by the divine force of this world.

Which is not far off, but thematically very different. The Owl Housemakes fun ofHarry Pottertropes including the “chosen one,” putting forward the message that Luz needs to believe in herself and not wait for a great destiny to happen. However, without even knowing, Luz was supported by the divine force of this world. Luz is a chosen one because King “chooses” her, not because he sees some kind of untold greatness in her, but because she provides him with the love and support he needs on his journey, which is beautifully true toThe Owl House’s central themes.
