In the meantime,Robby is still trying to reach Jake when the episode starts, forced to juggle fears about what’s happened to his son with managing the hospital in its most dire hour yet.

Because ofThe Pitt’s penchant for realism, the show pulls no punches with showcasing the hospital’s preparations.Shawn Hatosy’s Dr. Jack Abbott arrives on the scene, with him and Robby organizing the team, telling them they need to work quickly and efficiently. There won’t be any drawn-out tests, and every victim gets a color-coded wristband to determine the severity of their injuries. Bins filled with resources are carted in as even Gloria works amicably with the group to get operating rooms (ORs) prepared upstairs. And so, the most stressful hour of the medical drama begins.

The Pitt Refuses To Hold Back On Its Realism

It Pulls No Punches Showing The Aftermath Of The Mass Shooting

Every patient story highlightsThe Pitt’s emergency room accuracy, with a standout being Omar, a deaf boy who was shot in the chest.Despite his grim condition, he’s stabilized enough to be brought to an OR, although his mother isn’t as lucky; she was hit by a car bringing her son to safety, and is suffering lacerations to her liver. They don’t have enough blood to keep her alive before the next batch comes in, prompting Mel to donate her own to save her life.

Interpersonal Stories Continue In Surprising Directions

They Complement The Episode’s Momentum

Despite the situation unfolding, the medical drama still finds time to weave interpersonal drama into its story.Langdon suddenly returns to the hospital after Robby kicked him outat the end ofThe Pittepisode 10, leading to a short but tense conversation. However, the senior resident proves himself incredibly helpful, saving the life of a woman named Dawn who passed out because of her diabetes. It’s good to have an extra pair of hands at the hospital right now, but it’s also evident Robby doesn’t trust his motives.

In the meantime,Victoria is forced to work with her mother, Dr. Shamsi, who tries teaching her despite the severity of the situation. At one point, Victoria snaps at her, hostile, her focus drifting the more her mother tries quizzing her. This conflict seems to get more tense when the medical student suggests using a different type of tube and a urine bag to save someone they don’t have the proper equipment for. Shamsi doesn’t seem convinced, but they do it anyway, instilling the importance of out-of-the-box thinking in emergencies while still highlighting the mother-daughter conflict.

Other doctors employ creative methods to help save lives, like giving chest compressions to someone to get a tube down their throat.

As the hospital gets busier, McKay also makes sure Harrison is alright, asking him to wait in the break room as his grandparents are on their way to get him. Chad ends up trying to leave the hospital, but is shocked and horrified by the blood-soaked trauma center he steps into.McKay ends up sending him into the break room with their son, where he has him put on a movie, trying to forget the terrifying images he’s just seen. It’s his humanizing moment and one that seemingly makes him realize the pressure of his ex-wife’s job in saving lives.

The Shooting Storyline Is Far From Over

The Hospital Might Be In Danger

Despite all the chaos unfolding, the biggest question hovering over the episode is whetherTheresa’s son Davidwas in any way responsible for the shooting. Robby believes so, an opinion strengthened by his phone getting pinged at PittFest while the shooting was going on. However, just like Jake, he remains unaccounted for, making it unclear if he’s really the shooter. Answers might come soon, however, with a S.W.A.T. team arriving after hearing the culprit might be heading toward the hospital.

As for Jake, Robby’s still unable to contact him by the end of the episode, sending a message that won’t get delivered because the phone lines are so busy. The final shot of him nearly in tears confirms he’s reaching his breaking point, the anniversary of Adamson’s death and Jake’s unclear fate finally causing him to snap. Since more victims are still coming in,The Pitt’s final three hours promise more stress and sadness. Even so, its gripping realism and chaotic presentation in episode 12 make it the best entry in the show so far.
