Wind and Truthmay have concluded one sequence ofThe Stormlight Archive, but there are still five books to go and one of its major arcs has already been established.Wind and Truth’sclimactic endingsees the coalition defending its turf on multiple fronts, from Dalinar’s contest of champions with Odium to Adolin’s defense of Azimir toJasnah Kholin’s debate with Taravangian. Jasnah is only a supporting character for the most part of the first five volumes, and her loss of Thaylenah is arguably her defining moment so far.
Redemption is a common theme throughoutThe Stormlight Archive’scharacter arcs. Dalinar Kholin’s arc from being the Blackthorn to the leader of the reformedKnights Radiant ordersis the most prominent redemption story Brandon Sanderson has told, but these ideas are common in several characters' narratives, be it Szeth, Venli, or even Shallan. Sanderson’s books pose a hopeful message that any human being can move past their previous wrongdoings and forge a better life for themselves.

Jasnah Kholin’s Failure In Wind And Truth Will Define Her In Arc 2
Losing To Taravangian Will Motivate Her In Arc 2
Jasnah Kholin is still alive at the end ofWind and Truth, meaningshe’s going to have plenty of time ahead of her to ponder the defeat humanity suffered in the True Desolation. Thaylenah was a valuable part of the coalition that she personally defended inOathbringer, and the fact that she failed to protect it inWind and Truthwill remain with her forever, creating a new redemption arc. Jasnah is depicted as being one of the most intelligent characters in the Cosmere, but Taravangian’s character assassination importantly demonstrates that she has growing of her her own to do.
What will sting the most for her is that, in some ways, Taravangian wasn’t wrong.

Jasnah’s redemption arc won’t be one like Dalinar’s, where she has to recover from a reputation of atrocities and villainy. Though Odium did point out some of her lowest moments, Jasnah was never as bad as Dalinar in his earlier days. In her case, the redemption will be more of an internal process. Like Shallan, Kaladin, and other characters,Jasnah will likely spend the next novels learning from these mistakes and defining what makes her a hero. What will sting the most for her is that, in some ways, Taravangian wasn’t wrong.

She’s an incredibly intelligent character who’s only just beginning to find her potential. Why Jasnah’s Failure In Stormlight 5 Is So Important
This Defeat Will Stick With Jasnah Forever
Failure isn’t the same for Jasnah Kholin as it might be for another character, especially not a failure of this magnitude. She takes immense pride in being as intelligent and strong-willed as she is, even willing to be ostracized from her family as a heretic rather than conform.Failure for Jasnah Kholin is devastating, especially in the form of an intellectual debatewhere her personal attributes became the reason for her loss.
