Warning: spoilers for The Umbrella Academy season 4.
Summary
The Umbrella Academyseason 4 arrived with a lot of reveals and answers to the biggest questions left by previous seasons, and among them was what happened to Reginald’s (Colm Feore) home planet way before the events of season 1.The Umbrella Academyseason 3 endedwith Reginald’s timeline becoming a reality and the Hargreeves and Lila (Ritu Arya) reuniting in it. The Hargreeves found out they no longer had powers, and so season 4 caught up with them six years later as they all tried to live normal lives for the first time.
The Hargreeves teamed up one more time for a rescue mission as they had to find Jennifer (Victoria Sawal), but this forced them to reunite with Reginald as they needed some answers. Jennifer turned out to be the trigger of “The Cleanse”, an apocalyptic event that was closely linked to the Hargreeves and Reginald through the latter’s wife, Abigail (Liisa Repo-Martell).Abigail’s involvement in the end of the world also answered what happened to her and Reginald’s planet, and that had a direct impact on her actions in season 4.

Who Is Jennifer? The Umbrella Academy Season 4’s Vital New Character Explained
The Umbrella Academy season 4 finally introduced Jennifer, who turned out to be a much more important character than initially thought.
Abigail Hargreeves Accidentally Destroyed Her & Reginald’s Home Planet
Abigail Was Responsible For Massive Destruction
Abigail was the opposite of Reginald as she was kind and understanding, but she was also keeping a big secret.
Abigail Hargreeves made her first appearance in a flashback inThe Umbrella Academyseason 1, where she was agonizing while her and Reginald’s planet was being destroyed. Reginald released the marigolds before Abigail died and he left the planet, and Abigail wasn’t seen again until season 3. Reginald had kept Abigail’s frozen body in a capsule on the dark side of the moon, which explained why he sent Luther on a mission there for years. The machine inside Hotel Oblivion not only allowed Reginald to reset the timeline, but he was also able to bring Abigail back to life.

Abigail explained to the Umbrellas that she created the marigold particle, but that also created an opposite one called “durango”.
One of the biggest surprises in Reginald’s season 4 timeline was Abigail’s presence, and so she finally made her official debut inThe Umbrella Academy. Abigail was the opposite of Reginald as she was kind and understanding, but she was also keeping a big secret. Abigail explained to the Umbrellas that she created the marigold particle, but that also created an opposite one called “durango”.When durango interacted with a marigold, it unleashed an unstoppable physical reactionthat led to the extinction of everything.

That was the event the Keepers called “The Cleanse”, and it would get rid of the broken timelines and fix the multiverse by restoring the main timeline. The big twist inThe Umbrella Academyseason 4 was thatAbigail was the one who facilitated the triggering of the Cleanseby giving the jar of marigolds to the Hargreeves so they could regain their powers, leading them to Jennifer, and ensuring that no one stopped the Cleanse.Abigail explained to Reginald she felt guilty for creating the marigold and durango particles, and her death was her punishment.
In that conversation,The Umbrella Academyalso confirmed thatthese particles were what destroyed Abigail and Reginald’s home planet, which only made her guilt even bigger. Provoking the Cleanse was Abigail’s way of setting things right, as she also felt she shouldn’t have been brought back to life. Reginald listened and understood her motives, and they simply waited to be consumed by the Ben/Jennifer Cleanse monster.
What The Umbrella Academy Previously Revealed About Reginald’s Home Planet
The Umbrella Academy Kept Most Of Reginald’s Past A Secret
It’s unknown if Reginald was the only survivor from his home planet.
Most ofReginald’s backstory in Netflix’sThe Umbrella Academyis a mystery, but throughout its four seasons, it left a couple of clues. It’s known that both Reginald and Abigail were aliens, disguised as humans to blend among them, though it’s important to point out that even on their planet they looked human. It’s unknown if Reginald was the only survivor from his home planet, but before his custom-made timeline in season 4, he was the only one of his kind on Earth.
Reginald brought a lot of knowledge and technology with him, which he used to build his empire, contribute to the advancement of space technology, and train the Umbrella Academy. Thanks toThe Umbrella Academyseason 4, it’s now known that Abigail was also a scientist, so it could be that their species was a highly intelligent one, but unfortunately, that led to their demise. Thanks to the Cleanse, the multiverse was fixed and the main timeline was restored, erasing the Hargreeves from history in the process.
This didn’t affect the fate of Reginald and Abigail’s planet, though.Their home planet was still destroyed and Abigail died, but it’s understood that Reginald never released the marigolds, and he might have also died along with the rest of his people. The Umbrella Academyleft many questions about Reginald and Abigail’s origins and home planet, but at least it explained why and how it was destroyed.
