Warning! This post contains SPOILERS for Star Wars: Battle of Jakku - Insurgency Rising #1Star Warshas just revealed whenLeia Organa’sJedi path first began. In the wake of the Battle of Endor, the Rebellion was enjoying celebrations with the Ewok tribes as seen at the end ofReturn of the Jedi. However, a new and canonical Marvel series has revealed that Leia was offered the chance to become a Jedi, just like her twin brother Luke Skywalker.
As seen in Marvel’s newStar Wars: Battle of Jakku - Insurgency Rising #1by Alex Segrua, Leonard Kirk, and Rachelle Rosenberg,Leia Organa leaves the festivities on Endor to speak with Darth Vader’s still-smoldering remainson his funeral pyre, having only just recently learned from Luke that the redeemed Sith Lord was her father. Still harboring quite a bit of anger towards everything Anakin Skywalker did as Vader,Leia’s darker emotions were felt by her brother, prompting Luke’s offer to train his sister in the ways of the Force.

Naturally, Leia is unsure about whether to say yes to Luke’s offer, and the Skywalker siblings are interrupted by a report regardingthe Empire’s Governor Adelhard and the Anoat sector. However, this newStar Warsmoment is crucial and quite noteworthy, considering it’s already known that Leia eventually agrees to be trained as a Jedi (though not for long).
Luke Sensed Leia’s Darkness After Return of the Jedi
Still Reeling From The Truth About Darth Vader
Unable to forgive and separate all that her father did as Darth Vader, Leia’s inner turmoil is quite concerning for Luke. Not wanting anger and the dark side to drive his sister, Luke naturally offers to train Leia in the ways of the Force. As such, Luke recognizing his sister’s potential validates bothYoda’s comments inEmpire Strikes Backabout there being another hope for the galaxyshould Luke fail or fall, and the words from Vader himself inReturn of the Jediwhen he implied that the Sith would try to corrupt Leia to the dark side should Luke refuse to turn.

In Leia’s defense, it does make sense that she’d have a harder time letting go of her anger toward Vader compared to her brother. After all, Vader himself was responsible for torturing her on the Death Star. Combined with the fact that the battle station destroyed her homeworld not long after, and Leia’s struggle to let go of her anger is more than justified. To that end, it certainly adds a fascinating layer of depth both to the end ofReturn of the Jediand to her Jedi training going forward (even though it canonically doesn’t last long).

Leia Does Begin Her Jedi Path, But It Doesn’t Last Long
Thanks To Her Vision Of The Future
As seen in the officialStar Warscanon, Leia will eventually say yes and receive training from Luke, constructing her very own lightsaber and learning to use the Force as a Jedi. However,The Rise of Skywalkerconfirms that Leia will eventually walk away from her Jedi training, having sensed the death of her future son at the end of her Jedi path and that someone would eventually take up her lightsaber and continue her journey (revealed to be Rey Skywalker).Regardless, it’s going to be very exciting to hopefully see more of Leia’s training as this newStar Warsseries continues.
Star Wars: Battle of Jakku - Insurgency Rising #1is now on sale from Marvel Comics.

Leia Organa
The daughter of Anakin Skywalker and Padmé Amidala, Leia inherited her mother’s political skills and her father’s Force power. She was raised on Alderaan as a member of the royal family, and followed in her father’s footsteps by becoming a senator who secretly worked alongside the Rebel Alliance. Alderaan’s destruction changed everything, and Leia became a leader in both the Rebel Alliance and its successor government, the New Republic. She served there for decades, eventually leaving to found the First Order when she sensed its darkness growing. Leia gave much for her ideals, but eventually gave her life to redeem her son Ben.
