While there may not be a shortage of monster-taming RPGs available on nearly every modern console, it can be difficult to find one that really captures the energy of the olderPokémontitles. It may still be a little too early to judge this in-development project, but what has been shown off looks especially promising.
Over onKickstarter, developerGreg Chazotte shared more information about their upcoming monster-taming RPGPipkin. From a visual perspective, it’s clear that the game is taking plenty of notes fromPokémonandEarthbound, making it ideal for those fan bases, but there are some additional ideas that help separate it from those franchises. Firstly, Halloween is a major theme as the entire game has been designed to recreate the spookiest night of the year; The Autumn leaves and rampant pumpkins are adorable and should make for a distinct experience.

Beyond the Halloween aesthetic,Pipkinis differentiating itself fromPokémonbyincreasing the scale of the combat system. Battles will be 4v4, requiring trainers to properly strategize with their team compositions while also planning their moves to ensure that every member of the party is covered, especially against some of the more challenging opponents. Another key point Chazotte mentions in their breakdown of the game is theremoval of “filler” contentthat’s so often a problem in older RPGs;Pipkinaims to be a streamlined experience without grinding and unnecessary fluff.
Pipkinhas surpassed its Kickstarter goal by quite a margin:It was initially asking for $2,500 but that target has been smashed as the donations pool sits at $7,629at the time of writing. A release date has yet to be locked in but those interested in the game can check out in-development sprite work, monster designs, and even music tracks.Pipkinmay not see the light of day for some time yet but everything Chazotte has shown off looks incredibly exciting.

Those interested in the game can still donate some cash on Kickstarter with larger donations granting some fun rewards. Having played the demo on Steam, I’m confident fans of the monster-taming genre will undoubtedly find something to love here.
