There are certain films I don’t want to make a sequel to. I didn’t want to make a sequel to that [Edward Scissorhands] because it felt like a one-off thing. I didn’t want to have a sequel for ‘The Nightmare Before Christmas’ because it alsofelt like a one-off thing. Certain things are best left on their own and that for me is one of them.

What Tim Burton’s Decision Means For Nightmare Before Christmas

The Sequel Is Likely Never Coming

Burton’s decision to forego pursuing a sequel means that it is unlikely to come.It was Burton who first envisioned the film, and he also served as a writer and producer. Moving forward without his consent would be entering murky legal territory, as Disney likely do not have the sole rights to the movie. It was a collaboration between Disney’s Touchstone Pictures and Henry Selick’s and Tim Burton’s Skellington Productions. Attempting to developThe Nightmare Before Christmas 2without Burton’s consent is likely impossible.

Burton likely would have directed the movie, if not for his obligations toBatman Returns(1992).

Without his involvement, the movie could also fail to earn respect from the wider audience. Part of its draw was having such a respected creator’s name attached, which a sequel would not have.

Our Take On Burton Refusing Nightmare Before Christmas 2

He Is Making The Right Decision

Even setting aside Burton’s wish, the decision to keep Jack Skellington shelved is a smart one.The Nightmare Before Christmaswas a runaway success, earning over $100 million on an $18 million budget. It was also nominated for an Academy Award for Best Visual Effects. With critical and audience acclaim, it ensured a lasting legacy that made it a staple for the holiday season.
