NYT Mini Crossword: 8 Strategies To Solve It Fast
This tricky little five by five crossword isn’t always as easy as it looks; here are a couple easy tips and tricks to beat your friends' times!
If you still need some help, here are four category namesto help you out. You can get some more clues from the spoilers down further if you need a little extra push today.

___ROAD
FINE
LEVY
I got this one second, and I think it was a little tougher than it looks. LEVY, FINE, and CHARGE all look normal to me, but ASSESS. Or, at the very least, it’s different enough for me to make it stand out.ASSESS is more of a word to calculate what someone might owe, as opposed to imposing the FINE. Google has since told me that it is like the third definition of the word ASSESS, but it still has a slightly different feel to me than the other words.
CHARGING CABLE
MAGAZINE
This was the first category I got correct, and it was for a few different reasons. To me,it was more like things you might take with you on a trip, and I picked these words thinking in those terms. Although, to be fair, a stand at the airport is very much like a stand at the checkout line. I personally have never bought most of these items in a checkout line, as I am picky about CHAPSTICK, CABLES, and MAGAZINES, but I do very much buy CANDY at the checkout line when it strikes my fancy.

The Tiles game for the New York Times mobile app asks you to use various strategies to pair matching visual patterns together to build huge combos.
FILM SERIES
SHORT
FILM SERIES was the interesting word that I found when solving this puzzle. It’s interesting to actually include “film” in the wordas it’s a fairly big tip-off for a harder category. It’s one of those things where I might not have gotten this category at all if they just left it at “series.” Maybe they felt it would be too hard without it, but I would be interested to hear what others have to say. I also feel it could push people away from the correct answer if they see it and think it’s there to trick them.
ROCKY
SILK
I got this one last, and I’m not surprised. It’s definitely the hardest one to get today, although depending on your preference for ROCKY road ice cream, you might find it easier.I think it is interesting that only one of these is actually a road that you might drive on- although I suppose there are rocky roads, but I rarely hear them called that. It’s usually much more specific about the type of rocks, but it doesn’t matter.
