One of the surprise hits of 2024 wasWarhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2, a game that mixed multiplayer battles focused on either cooperative gameplay or 6v6 battles and a surprisingly deep and immersive single-player campaign that introduced theworld ofWarhammer 40Kto thousands of new players. Based on thesuccess ofSpace Marine 2, it seemed like it was only a matter of time before a new game was announced. That day has officially come.
Today, Saber Interactive,Focus Entertainment, and Games Workshop announced they were makingWarhammer 40,000: Space Marine 3,featuring a new immersive campaign and multiplayer mode. No word was provided on when the game will officially launch,although Games Workshop announced it was likely years away from release.Saber Interactive and Focus Entertainment intend to support Space Marine 2 in the meantime, with “years of content” still planned.

Games Workshop confirmed that we’ll get to see a new storyline and likely new factions and enemies inSpace Marine 3.One distinct possibility is the Necrons, an empire of sentient robotic creatures that can transfer consciousness from one drone to the next.The Necrons were heavily hinted at duringSpace Marine 2, but they have yet to make an appearance in any missions. We’ll also see the introduction of “large-scale battles” inSpace Marine 3, adding the possibility that we could see massive conflicts on the scale of the battles seen in theWarhammer 40,000tabletop game.

Focus Entertainment and Saber Interactive aren’t resting on their laurels after the success ofSpace Marine 2.Matthew Karch, CEO of Saber Interactive, described the release as an evolution of everythingSpace Marine 2accomplished. “We are now starting to develop Space Marine 3, a game that carries with it tremendous expectations from our rapidly expanding fanbase,“Karch shared in the announcement.“While we will continue to support and grow the Space Marine 2 universe over the coming years, we will take all our learnings and apply them to an even bigger and more spectacular game for the third installment.”

WhileWarhammer 40Khas been around for over 40 years, many players wereintroduced to the rich and dark loreof the game for the very first time thanks toSpace Marine 2.We can’t wait to see how Focus Entertainment and Saber Interactive continue to grow the franchisein the next installment.
Orks and Necrons remain the most likely foes, but I’d love to see the game tackle the Drukhari (which are rumored to get a major line refresh with the launch of 11th edition) or even the T’au. As long as the same amount of care that definedSpace Marine 2is put intoSpace Marine 3,Warhammer 40Kis in great hands.
