What The SNL Return Means For The Lonely Island

It Is The Lonely Island’s First SNL Short In Six Years

It should come as no surprise that audiences were this excited to see the return of The Lonely Island toSaturday Night Live, as it comes after the group’s long history of work on the series. The band was hired as part ofSaturday Night Livein 2005, with Samberg serving as a featured player on the series. From there, the trio would go on to make “SNL digital shorts,” which would appear as pre-recorded music videos. This tenure included classic hits for the band, such as “Lazy Sunday,” “Jack Sparrow,” and “I’m On A Boat.”

The Lonely Islandhas made one feature film featuring their music,Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping.

Afterinitially leavingSaturday Night Live, the trio returnedin 2018 for “Natalie’s Rap 2.” This was a sequel sketch featuring Natalie Portman, who had done “Natalie’s Rap” with the comedy group nearly a decade earlier in 2009.The group had not appeared on the series since 2018, so this week was The Lonely Island’s first onSNLin six years.

Our Take On Sushi Glory Hole

The Sketch Has Great Lonely Island Elements

My reaction to “Sushi Glory Hole” was not dissimilar to that of many of the fans displayed above. I think thisSNLdigital shortpossessed everything that a great Lonely Island short should have. They took a simple but ridiculous concept and almost over-committed to it, creating comedy in the absurdism. This method is so quintessentially Lonely Island, and I hope that this could cue futureSaturday Night Livesketches sooner than six years from now.
