Kaos, Netflix’s hit dark comedy about modern-day Greek gods, has viewers wondering where the series was filmed — andKaos' cast of characters, led by Jeff Goldblum’s Zeus, actually traveled to Greece to shoot the series on location. Created by Charlie Covell (Netflix’sThe End of the F***ing World), the Greek mythology-filled black comedy that revolves around three humans who discover that they are not only connected to each other, but, thanks to a long-standing ancient prophecy, epic conspiracies involving the Greek gods. Meanwhile,Zeus becomes wildly insecure upon noticing a wrinkle on his forehead.

However, Goldblum’s Greek god isn’t just vain; a wrinkle on an all-powerful god’s forehead might just signify the impending end of the world. Paranoid and vengeful,Zeus' prophecy inKaosbrings him face-to-face with the trio of mortals as well as other corrupt, arrogant gods, including Hera (Janet McTeer).Location-wise,Kaosfeatures Mount Olympus, the Underworld, and everything in between, including Krete— a modern-day spin on Greece’s island of Crete. The latter, in particular, has promptedKaos' viewers to wonder if the real-life Crete serves as the backdrop to the show’s first outing.

Most Of Kaos Was Filmed In Andalusia, Spain

Iconic Andalusian Locations Served As Stand-Ins For Greece

Despite its clever references to Greek mythology, most ofKaosseason 1 was filmed in the Andalusia region of Spain. More specifically, theperfectPercy Jacksonreplacement for adultswas largely shot on location in Costa del Sol, an area that’s known for having over 300 days of sunshine every year. Although the region was once made up of tiny fishing communities, it’s now a world-renowned tourist destination. That sunshine-and-holiday vibe makes Costa del Sol the perfect backdrop forKaos' Krete, the Mediterranean paradise that fills much of the show’s screentime.

The Andalusian cities and their surrounding natural vistas work well as Greek island stand-ins.

Eagle-eyed viewers will be able to spot the region’s well-known hot spots, like the waterfront vistas of Cádiz, the cobbled streets of Seville, and the palm tree-dotted Marbella, in panoramic shots. The Andalusian cities and their surrounding natural vistas work well as Greek island stand-ins. For example, the first episode’s beach scene featuring Orpheus (Killian Scott) and Dionysus (Nabhaan Rizwan) was shot in Santa María del Mar, but it feels like a Greek isle, whileMalaga is transformed intoKaos' take on Heraklion. All in all, Andalusia, Spain, serves as a convincing Krete for the show.

Scenes Featuring Zeus & Hera’s Abodes Were Shot In Valencia & Madrid, Spain

Kaos Used Its Lavish Locations To Further The Gods' Characterizations

Despite the majority of filming taking place in Andalusia, a significant portion of Netflix’sKaoswas shot in Valencia and Madrid — two of Spain’s more popular and well-known destinations. The film team traveled to the outskirts of Valencia to capture the Saint Miquel dels Reis monastery, which they transformed into a temple dedicated to Hera. Elsewhere, Valencia’s Cheste Educational Complex became the show’s Underworld. In Madrid, the luxurious Villalís Palace was used to capture the majesty of Zeus and Hera’s mansion(viaGlamour). From beginning toending,Kaoschose its palatial, god-appropriate locations wisely.

Kaos' Charon Gold Coin Explained: Why Riddy Was Trapped In The Afterlife

Netflix’s Kaos cleverly incorporates Ancient Greek mythology into the story, such as Riddy getting trapped without her gold coin in the Afterlife.

Almería, Spain Also Served As A Backdrop For Jeff Goldblum’s Kaos

Cabo de Gata Was The Perfect Coastal Backdrop For The Series

Founded during the Islamic era, Almería, Spain, is a unique blend of cultural and architectural influences, making it a great location forKaos' stunning coastal shots as well as some of the show’s more lavish settings. Notably,Jeff Goldblum’s Rotten Tomatoes streak-continuing showuses Cabo de Gata-Níjar Natural Park’s rugged coastline, white-sand beaches, and sparkling coves as backdrops for its Grecian setting. Notably, the Alfaro restaurant serves as the filming location for The Cave, whilethe church of Ermita de Torregarcía is transformed intoKaos' Chapel of Hera, reiterating the rich history (and actual wealth) of Almería.

What Is Meander In Netflix’s Kaos? Zeus' Fountain & How It Affects The Gods

The Greek gods in Netflix’s Kaos depend on a substance called Meander, but what exactly is it — and why is it so important to these immortal beings?

Kaos Season 1 Also Filmed In Italy & The UK

The Greece-Set Series Moved To Several Other Countries

WhileKaosgets a lot right about Greek mythology, it didn’t spend any time in Greece. Even so, the production found solid stand-ins in Spain and Italy. Although Zeus and Hera’s mansion has ties to Madrid, the Mount Olympus-set château’s grounds are actually the beautiful gardens found on the Villa d’Este in Tivola, just outside of Rome. Designed in the 16th century, the villa boasts the appropriate flair for the Olympian couple’s abode. Finally,Kaosseason 1 had some reshoots to tackle, which took place in the United Kingdom — easily the least Greek-looking backdrop of all.

Kaosseason 1 is now streaming on Netflix.
