Introduced in inX-Force#18 –written by Fabian Nicieza, wirg art by Greg Capullo – the Legacy Virus was a deadly disease created by Apocalypse in the future but altered by Stryfe toattack the X Geneand then released onto the current timeline’s unsuspecting populous. There were three strains of the virus,Legacy-1, Legacy-2, and Legacy-3, each an airborne pathogen resulting in a grave sickness that wiped out a large portion of the mutant population, including members of the X-Men. Though a cure was eventually found due to Colossus’ sacrifice, this latest variant has evolved into an entirely new threat.
Unlike its predecessors, Legacy 2.0 is more akin to an infectious zombie outbreak fueled by radiation with those infected succumbing to Stryfe’s control.

This new fourth iteration of the infamous disease, also labeled as “Legacy: Reborn” is drastically different from its prior counterparts, withthe new Legacy Virus 2.0 having elements similar to a techno-virus that possesses and controls its unwilling host. Unlike its predecessors, Legacy 2.0 is more akin toan infectious zombie outbreakfueled by radiation with those infected succumbing to Stryfe’s will. While the previous Legacy Viruses attacked the X Gene, Deadpool notes this new strain is set on executing humanity, most similar to Legacy-3, but with Stryfe’s goal of inciting a race war between humans and mutants.

The Legacy Virus was highly rumored to be an allegory to the AIDS epidemic as many parallels were drawnbetween the real-world crisis and Marvel Universe’s blame placed on mutants, with Legacy-2 having similar symptoms such as a sickly, weakened state and lesions on the skin. However,this most recent variant takes on a completely new look, with Deadpool and the various undead Jurrasic kaiju all possessing glowing eyes, and Wolverine stating Wade smelled of silicone and the heat that radiates off an old computer. This latest variant of the Legacy Virus is a complete alteration of what was previously known.
